Gilbert, thanks for the submission! If you want (but you don't have to), feel free you see if you want to work our zone theme into your session https://github.com/KadeMorton/Xenshana
Thanks @KadeMorton ! I really like the theme and think there's some ways I can incorporate it that clarify my thinking. I'll make edits over the weekend.
Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest.
Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.
You'll receive a follow up email from us in the next few days.

What will happen in your session?
Attendees will bring their experience of different social platforms and communities, how they've grappled with bad or hateful actors, and how language has changed to circumvent social control. We'll discuss current models for moderation/curation, their ethical implications, problems of scale, effectiveness, etc. I will bring information about and implementations of different mechanisms that exist in the wild right now and show ways that their communities behave and communicate in conversation with those institutional rules. We will try to work out how to identify positive and perverse interactions and discuss designing with intention. We will break out into small groups to workshop and tackle discrete bad outcomes, then reconvene and compare notes.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
I hope participants gain a greater awareness of how initial conditions and subtle curatorial responses shape discourse for all members of a community, as well as tools, vocabulary, and a feeling of empowerment to engage with those systems. For those with the means and inclination, I hope to provide useful materials for experimenting with moderation and NLP as they pertain to online communities.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
A projector and large, easel-like notepads would make it easier to accommodate however many people show up.
