Hi there!
We just submitted our application to Mozilla Open Leaders and we think that a lot is missing here to people understand our project, so bellow we will try to explain it better.
We are members of a university laboratory that researches participatory public policies -- L3P > http://pesquisa.medialab.ufg.br/colecao/l3p/
Our main project is Tainacan, a repository software that was developed based on a research that showed us that no other digital archive was able to meet the needs of a collaborative and semantic web: http://pesquisa.medialab.ufg.br/item/134333-294617-3-pb/
Tainacan has now two different implementations. The first one is an stand alone application (https://github.com/medialab-ufg/tainacan). The new one is now connected to Wordpress as a plugin and a theme (https://github.com/tainacan/).
The development of Tainacan today is maintained by decentralized implementation projects with governmental institutions, mainly museums. But as free software, it is open to anyone to use it.
We are now facing two challenges for the continuity of the project: to form an independent community around the tool; and, the main reason why we sent this proposal, to make people aware of good practices for the digitization of collections.
We don't think we should be the ones who have to build data patterns alone just because we have more web literacy than others. Our main challenge lies precisely to allow people with great knowledge about repositories, great knowledge about cultural goods, but little knowledge about computers, to build with us this steps for the best practices on making a repository available on the web.
The institutions, mainly museums, want to build their digital repositories at a Tainacan instalation but every one wants to play the game with their own balls... but then there will be no game! ;)
The diversity should be on the cultural goods they will provide access to, but we must have to have a minimum systematization for them to prepare, build and be able to maintain their own repositories in an autonomous way, being collaborative and inter-operable at the same time.
A lot of what is in the museums remains on the museums. And a lot of cultural productions of popular manifestations remains only accessible locally. So our work now is focused in a bunch of practices and free tools that can make possible the digital presence of a diversity of cultural actors in an autonomous way with the intention of culture dissemination and democratic access to cultural goods.
We want that from the guy who sings from a parking lot to the National Museum, we want both to be able to publish and to achive other people in an horizontal way.
We want the consumerism of culture on the internet to be free, authentic and democratic, not shaped by algorithms that dictate what they should see for whatever reason.
.
Hey @f4bs, the Web Literacy team has reviewed your session and we think it’s great. We have two questions for you regarding your stipend request. Will you or another facilitator be able to attend the festival in the event that we do not have a stipend available to allocate to you? Also are you or another facilitator able to successfully run this session in the situation where we are only able to provide a stipend to one facilitator?
Hey there! It is wonderful to know that our proposal was reviwed as "great". Thank you! :)
About the questions regarding the stipend request: at this time, nor me or other facilitator will be able to attend the festival if there is no stipend available. But yes, me or onother facilitator will be able to successfully run this session in the situation that there will be only one stipend available.
Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest.
Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.
You'll receive a follow up email from us in the next few days.

What will happen in your session?
We intend to use the Participatory Rapid Appraisal (PRA) method, that is an approach used by NGOs to incorporate the knowledge and opinions of a group in the planning and management. So basically we will divide our time in three moments. First: to separate small groups under the same knowledge field to interact and brainstorm about what they think are the best practices for creating and maintaining digital repositories. Second: every group will dissolve into new mixed ones and will collect the brainstorm and filter practices that cater every field represented at the group. Last: one person from each group will present the synthesis of their group, converging and resulting in the first list of practices to be available.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
To provide a initial prototype of a booklet on best practices for creating and maintaining digital repositories towards digital culture. that will help human manifestations to rise up through the internet with an anthropological method of cultural goods distribution. It is important to understand that this will be only a start for the project, as there is a big diversity of people that should be listened to build it up together with us, like librarians, museologists, archivists and anthropologists all around the world.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
