What will happen in your session?

A developer and a researcher, both feminist activists fighting for diversity, tie up theory and practice of diversity in tech. The session is divided into 2 parts: input and hands-on. First Fiona shares with you the results of her research on the "Gendered Shaping of Technology" - how did gender affect technology and vice versa and what we can learn from it? Marie will put this into a tangible example: Period tracking and her OSS work on the app 'drip'. This will highlight why diversity and representation matter. The input intends to stimulate an exchange of ideas, that aim for transparent and reliable technologies. Split into groups, you're then invited to drafting concepts for tech that helps advance your causes.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

We would pass on what we've learned after years of activism in digital literacy, diversity and women in tech. We have made the experience that pairing up our hands on work with a theoretical framework helps to understand and communicate and even improve the results. We would like to share what we've learned and encourage the participants to apply and/or adapt our input to their very own contexts and challenges. Within the group people are encouraged to share their ideas and further learn from each other's experiences.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We only need a projector for presentation slides at the beginning (no audio or video)and could then need some pen and paper for brainstorming ideas and drafting concepts with the group. That's it <3.
