[ Session Name ] Privacy by design compliance for solutions developers [ Primary Space ] Privacy and Security
[ Submitter's Name ] FRANCIS OTIENO [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Strathmore University
[ Other Facilitator 1's Name ] Joy Wathagi
What will happen in your session?
Our session will involve participants thinking about data privacy legal compliance issues that make innovation more difficult. The result we hope to achieve is that we want everyone involved in creating solutions to think of privacy by design as a positive concept. So we will introduce a few legal compliance hurdles that a solution developer is likely to face and a few case scenarios for the participants to think about. The participants will then break off into small groups to brainstorm on how an innovator can develop data based solutions for their community while protecting the users’ right to privacy. After brainstorming, we will converge and have individuals share what they thought about the privacy issues they tackled.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
We hope that the participants will leave the session with a different view of privacy by design and compliance to data privacy requirements. We hope that they will look at data privacy compliance issues as a way of creating solutions that are human rights friendly. We hope that eventually these efforts lead to a handbook that will be used to guide developers in incubators across the many hubs. As a facilitator, this session will help me pick perspectives from other people from different regions on the issue of privacy by design and compliance. From the feedback, observations and contribution of other participants I will be able to refine the handbook that I am currently working on.
