What will happen in your session?

-Presence Exercise: improv game to build listening, connection and concentration

-State “Need” of building Playscape: web-based real-time collaborative play “sandbox” using full-bodied gestural interfaces to remix sights, sounds & movements from anywhere.

-Research: What tools can we apply to digital spaces to reclaim Presence found in embodied human interaction?

-Play 3-4 Presence Exercises Pass Sound Zip Zap Zoom Sculpture Game

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

-Uncover new techniques or tools of “building Presence at a distance.” Specifically, we wish to discover new ways of engaging remote participants through meaningful embodied interactions.
Ex: Modify our embodied controller interface, so that any participant in front of our webcam can create sounds and/or visuals through movement of their body.

-Trigger participants to realize that the dominant way of interacting in digital space is mentally through words and code, leaving the body almost entirely out of the conversation and inspire them to approach situations with a larger perspective of potential interaction.

-Create sense of belongingness and connection from memory of “building Presence at a distance” due to co-creation of a movement-based visual art experience.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Time needed

90 mins

Hey @RadiantIRIS !

I'm one of the Openness wranglers for MozFest. We're reviewing applications at the moment and had a quick question: MozFest is a really large, open space sub-divided into smaller spaces - and sound from the whole festival tends to carry, a lot. Given the noisy environment, does this affect your plans at all? It also sounds like you might need quite a bit of space - can you estimate how big a room you'd need if accepted, or how you'd manage with a small space?

Thanks!

Dear Yo,

The noisy environment will not really affect our plans. Some of the Presence games can even be modified to be silent requiring visual and tactile focus to bring people into the present. We have a variety of theatrical activities to choose from that can be dynamically adapted to our circumstances. The sound simply add to the challenge of maintaining focus and Presence.

This is also true regarding the space. We can adapt to any space. However, the size of the space will determine the number of participants that can be involved. We have run these activities in people's living rooms as well as in a huge warehouse. If we have a smaller space, we may have to limit the number of people, but to be in demand seems like a good problem :)

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards, Krishnan
