Draft of our Mission & Vision:

Mission To build equity-focused, open, connected intercultural learning experiences - making use of the open web in ways intercultural learning experiences do not often do, and maintaining an equity focus so that the intercultural learning experiences do not become exploitative and power imbalanced.

Vision -To provide a model for equity-focused open intercultural learning that can be replicated, expanded and improved upon, while involving educators and students from all over the world -To use our experience in the first iteration to improve on further iterations and contribute to research and literature on potential good practices to use for similar purposes -To engage in and model continual learning and emergent curriculum development as Equity Unbound progresses, through open engagement with all participants. -To grow a global network of digital citizens committed to connected learning and intercultural digital literacies on the open web

brownsarahm commented 5 years ago

For me, your mission would be stronger if some parts were rephrased to be more positive. For example, instead of "making use of the open web in ways intercultural learning experiences do not often do," maybe "bringing new open web practices to intercultural learning experiences." It might be even better to name specific practices, but without knowledge of your area, I'm not sure if that's feasible.

Also, after reading these, I still don't have a good idea of what you're building. Can you include concrete examples of what you mean by intercultural learning experiences? or am I just too far from your intended audience and that is a well defined term within the appropriate audience?

catherinecronin commented 5 years ago

@brownsarahm Hi Sarah - thanks for giving us feedback on our Mission & Vision. This will give us a chance to review our statements and make improvements. I'm particularly struck by your 2nd comment:

> Also, after reading these, I still don't have a good idea of what you're building. Can you include concrete examples of what you mean by intercultural learning experiences? or am I just too far from your intended audience and that is a well defined term within the appropriate audience?

Maha, Mia and I are all connected, open educators, and no doubt use language in ways that are understood in that world - but we could make our intentions clearer for the benefit of people with different areas of expertise. Very valuable feedback, thanks.

miazamoraphd commented 5 years ago

Agreed! The feedback is very helpful, so thanks Sarah!

Here is an initial take on the "README" file requested. It is a snapshot of what is on our current Equity Unbound HOMEPAGE (http://unboundeq.creativitycourse.org):

Equity Unbound is an emergent, collaborative curriculum which aims to create equity-focused, open, connected, intercultural learning experiences across classes, countries and contexts. Equity Unbound was initiated by Maha Bali @bali_maha (American University in Cairo, Egypt), Catherine Cronin @catherinecronin (National University of Ireland, Galway), and Mia Zamora @MiaZamoraPhD (Kean University, NJ, USA) for use in their courses this term (September-December 2018), but it is open to all.

Equity Unbound is for learners and/or educators at all levels (e.g. undergraduate, postgraduate, professional development) who are interested in exploring digital literacies with an equity and intercultural learning focus, in an open and connected learning environment. Our motto is:

“The only way to make borders meaningless is to keep insisting on crossing them.” (Lina Mounzer) Participants will collaborate in a series of open online activities including: collaborative annotation using open-source Hypothes.is, social network conversations and live studio visits, a Wikipedia edit-a-thon, blogging, collaborative multimedia making, and creating their own new learning activities (inspired by the DS106 assignment bank). Activities will seek to develop critical digital literacies and intercultural collaboration while encouraging questions of equity issues such as equity in web representation, digital colonialism, safety and security risks on the web, and how these differ across contexts.

To find out more: Check out our current activities on Twitter: @UnboundEq and/or #UnboundEq Click An overview (in menu bar above) to see the 6 Equity Unbound themes. Select an option in Weeks/Themes to see more details about the activities planned for each theme. Click All Unbound voices to see all blogs posts connected with #UnboundEq. Click Resources to see the growing list of resources we are using in Equity Unbound Click Participate (on the About menu) to contact us about participating, or to find out more.

I wonder where the space is to highlight anticipated challenges? Among challenges I am already seeing are A. People thinking this IS a MOOC. It is not B. We currently don't have enough intentional cross cultural deep interaction built in... C. What if well-intentioned (or not) participants in the open space bring in something toxic? An old question of how to remain open and hospitable without opening yourself and other participants to harm?

Hi Maha,

There was a link to an alternative format for the canvas given in the community call minutes – this has a space for risks It may that that format better suits your project. Sam - thanks, the alternative canvas looks useful and I like "measures of success" as wording vs "metrics". Looking forward to discussing and then creating a new one.

I will be on my phone in the car again. Glad Cat will hopefully have better internet then!

Thanks for that, Sam. I am en route from Dublin to Galway & hope to participate in our call on the train. The wifi is not great but I will try to join from my mobile phone, audio-only (is that what you did last time, Maha?). Hopefully will join you via audio in 1/2 hour.

Thanks, Catherine

Hi Maha,

There was a link to an alternative format for the canvas given in the community call minutes – this has a space for risks It may that that format better suits your project. You can view it here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1rPp25BiwSt-HoUGH_y6Kmj55YeGyEgwGfNjXcCtvOB0/edit#slide=id.g3c5c51b43b_0_0

A point for discussion in our meeting may be the metrics.

Looking forward to chatting later.

Hi all, could you please update the initial issue to indicate what tasks have been completed. Thanks

miazamoraphd commented 5 years ago

Hi Sam,

Some updates:

We have an updated Canvas: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1qyJxvB15PCAR5315bxRCe_E7NdnGRNeFuQOhdHQUB-E/edit?usp=sharing

And we have a GitHub repository: https://github.com/UnboundEq

More updates after our mentor meeting! Mia

quirksahern commented 5 years ago

Hi all,

Just looking at your updated Canvas. For Barriers to Entry – are there things people would need to participate but may not have e.g. language – could this prevent people from engaging, in that either don’t speak the content language, or not familiar with academic language technology – will people need access to good wifi to take part or is 3G or GPRS ok? e.g. simple text vs image heavy and video

Purpose of project – what are your objectives? Target user needs – this is tied to contributing guidelines, how do you want people to contribute or engage? How will they know how to? What do they need to know?

As I said in our call, for now focus on MozFest. A ReadMe and some form of contributing guidelines will be incredibly be helpful for getting people to contribute.

Sam
