Folks, I'll be at a conference on 11, 12 and 13 September, so we will need to either advance or postpone next week's inaugural call. Would sometime on Friday (14 September) suit you? Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm also happy to jump into a call on Saturday (15 September).
No worries, Luis and I are available on Friday the 14th after 5pm—would this work for you?

What timezone is this, @eebigger? I'm on CEST (GMT+02).
Same time zone-we are in Barcelona. CEST (GMT +02).
Thanks, Elizabeth

Cool! :D Will ping you in a day when my calendar for the rest of this week is clearer.
Shall we speak at 17:30 today? :)
Do you have a preferred video-conferencing service in mind? Will both you and @fraguada be joining the call from the same device?
17:30 sounds good! Google hangout, ok? We will call from one device.
Thanks, Elizabeth

Hangout works fine. Will send you a link to a call later. Thanks, once again!
Hey @eebigger and @fraguada, I've dropped you both an e-mail with links for the notes and for our call. :) Speak to you in a few minutes.
We have two statements: We are building the Open Body Database, an open-source platform for sharing human body data so that we can support a transitioned fashion industry that is sustainable and based on real human bodies.
and
We are (I’m) working with contributors to build the Open Body Database so that society can have open access to biometric datasets and create open ethical biometric data collection consent.
Comment from Cohort C discussion: try to use descriptions or broader understood words instead of biometric, for greater understanding and inclusion.
I'm really intrigued by this one, and enjoyed checking out your website as well! One question I have is about who your audience is, and what kinds of 'human body data' are in use here: if I'm a consumer looking to buy a pair of pants, do I ever interact with an app/product labeled 'GenCloth'? Or do you work with designers/developers? How does a consumer collect their own measurements and send them to GenCloth?
We are building The Open Body Database, an open-source platform for archiving and sharing human body data, to foster design and research based on real human bodies.
We are working open because we believe the human body belongs to every unique human and such a resource must be built from an open community with body positivity outlook and acceptance of all preferences.
Extended WHY we are working open. @eebigger summed it up:
Dealing with the data of the human form require openness in communication and as every human form is different, the benefits of utilizing those variables within the database and within the community are substantial. Personal preference of privacy, gender discussions, forms, shapes and the multitude of variables the human form contains must be built from a trusting community with body positivity outlook and acceptance of all preferences. Furthermore the data collection and privacy forms must reflect these policies.
List of awesome vision statements:

Hi @mekline! Great question! The idea is to have networks of designers/developers that interact directly with consumers. In order to collect and handle body data/body scans, (we are in the EU and comply openly with the new GDPR laws) someone needs to be held accountable for the data collection. So while a consumer could have their body scanned themselves becoming their own data collector in theory it is more plausible to ensure privacy and open data laws via controlled data collection. But we are still researching how people can openly share their body scans with the open body database.
I really like the development of your vision statement, how it became more general for all research and design, and not just clothing. I can see so many interesting uses of this data, from developing accessible environments and tools, to architecture and interior design, to sports and athletics, to workspaces, to travel, etc. Any situation where the human body is interacting with the physical world around them, and how those interactions change depending on their own dimensions, could gain a lot from accessing this data.
Great idea, the readme is very clear on what's to be achieved and mentions some things to work on. Personally it would also help me if there were appropriate issues for these things though :+1: Looking forward to see this project come to life!
Thanks @celaus! We are working this week to break everything out into issues! Stay tuned!
"No such data repository exists" doesn't seem to be a strong UVP. I think making the data easily assessable (e.g. standard format, API, etc.) could be part of the UVP.
@kmahelona I like the idea of keeping the UVP positive statements as well, I agree we might need to rework that statement and adding open accessibility is for sure a value.
@kmahelona Open Canvas updated. Thanks for the suggestion.
I think the broader applications of such a dataset paired with your thoughtfulness about being ethical makes this such an important opportunity for inclusiveness.
Here is the start of an up-goer-five compatible vision statement. Emphasized words are not compatible:
We are building The Open Body Database, a place for storing and sharing human body information to ...
We are working open because we believe the human body belongs to everyone and such a place must be built from an open group of humans with body positivity outlook and acceptance of all preferences.
Note: I was using SimpleWriter to check words. Apparently it accepts "information" where the Up Goer Five Text Editor does not.
