Folks, I'll be at a conference on 11, 12 and 13 September, so we will need to either advance or postpone next week's inaugural call. Would sometime on Friday (14 September) suit you? Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm also happy to jump into a call on Saturday (15 September).

TeddyCr commented 5 years ago

Hey Achintya,

I hope you are doing well. Friday or Saturday at the initial time (10AM EST) works for me.

Let me know which day works better for you and how what number we should dial in to join the call.

Thanks,

Teddy

Saturday would work better for me! Will follow-up with call details etc. :)

Any preferences for a video-conferencing system?

TeddyCr commented 5 years ago

Hey Achintya,

I hope you are doing well. Sounds good. No preferences for the video conferencing system.

Thanks,

Teddy

Hi @RaoOfPhysics, @acabunoc - I just realized I wasn't receiving updates because I hadn't started watching the repo. Here I am :)

Looking forward to our first session!

RaoOfPhysics commented 5 years ago

@owenjoseph, @TeddyCr: Let's speak tomorrow at 10:00 EST, if that's fine for all! It's 16:00 CEST (UTC+02) for me. :) Will send out details about how to join the call and where we can take notes. Speak to you very soon!

TeddyCr commented 5 years ago

Hey anicha,

That is perfect. We’ll be waiting for the follow up regarding how to join the call and notes.

Thanks,

Teddy

I've sent you all an e-mail. Speak in a few minutes. :)

TeddyCr commented 5 years ago

Thanks for the quick chat today Achintya. It was really nice meeting you.

I’ve added one more goal to the document - see below.

Goal: “how to create a formalized feedback loop that allow contributors and users to give feedback and influence product features/governance decisions.”

Vision Statement

We are working with city residents and local governments to build an open platform where people can voice their opinions on local government actions so that individuals and local governments can work together on improving communities.

We are working open on this project because we want each city to have its own platform to maximize the impact of the solution we are building.

README 1st draft

Welcome to Engage!

Do you feel disconnected from government? Do you ever walk past city hall and wonder “what exactly do they do in there, anyway?” You’re not alone!

Local governments have more direct impact over more aspects of our day-to-day lives than the national government does. Yet people are half as likely to vote in local elections as compared with national.

We’re aiming to change that.

Engage is a civic participation platform designed specifically to increase involvement at the local level. In its MVP phase, Engage is going to make it easier for the residents of Santa Monica to offer feedback on items up for consideration by the city council. It’s our hope that enthusiastic contributors – maybe you! – will expand the platform to other local governments, and to more use cases.

Engage is built in REACT ([engage-client repo]) and Django ([engage-backend repo]).

If you want to get to know more about the MVP, check out mockups, see what’s been built, what’s left, and what’s next, check out our [project wiki].

And before you contribute (and we hope you do!) please take a look at our [Code of Contribution].

Roadmap Features

@owenjoseph Finally found your project! I understand now why the Decidim platform might be of interest! Regarding your open canvas, perhaps you can list a bit about yourselves in the Contributor Profiles. Why did you get started on this? What skills do you have that are useful for the project? I think there would be plenty of people excited about participating in government if they knew there was a way to do so! For contributor channels, if you are building a platform, maybe you can start a Meetup group, host small hackathons to develop the platform, and host community events around important government issues.
