Clarify Stage Setups for Design #63

Closed sabrinang closed 7 years ago

sabrinang commented 7 years ago

There will be two stages to consider:

Main Stage (Big Space - Level 4) The main stage may not be the main focus this year as talks will be done on the D&D stage.

Dialogue and Debates Stage (Walker Space - Level 0) The talks will be given from this space and videos will be streamed and recorded from here. It’ll be a good opportunity to think about how branding shows up in video frames too.

Elements to Consider

Discussion is needed to clarify what we have access to brand and create while keeping in mind there are budget limitations so we can think about strategies what can be shared in both spaces.

edrushka commented 7 years ago

cc @Saallen @KevZawacki @marcwalsh we'll need to define what setups we want in both spaces, and which assets (if any -- e.g. banners, podiums) can be used in both.

KevZawacki commented 7 years ago

@edrushka My initial thinking is branding on both stages should match. But, we should invest more heavily in the D+D space.

Saallen commented 7 years ago

I loved the background from last year- so that strong statement is slick and a good tie between the two spaces- I am going to suggest no podium. Mainstage The main stage will be only up and running for 30 mins each day so I imagine one large screen or 2x 80inc, maybe a comfort monitor is enough. Open to reducing in size When there is no activity here I will repurpose the screen for the Art exhibit

D&D I think here we can re-set depending on type of talk two chairs or couch for conversation if its a 10 talk they can stand, move around with roving mics *if its a debate then the podiums could be good visually utilisng the same backdrop here as main stage will give a nice flow Will we need a screen? If yes then one on the back of the stage will not need a comfort monitor

Assets

It might be good to note here the issues are playing a large part in the narrative in D&D so if each talk in D&D is based on a different issue it would be good to highlight that in the stage assest

KevZawacki commented 7 years ago

@Saallen I think we should plan on having a screen for D+D -- some speakers may want to use slides.

marcwalsh-zz commented 7 years ago

I'd go for a screen or projection in the background of the shot, and having a still designed if there are no slides. I would suggest a comfort monitor is essential for slides and for timings. It means the speaker will not start turning around to check the slide they are on etc and it allows us to show a visual cue to wrap up a talk if needed - especially if we're looking at streaming externally we wouldn't want to over run.

Visually for on-screen I would recommend not going with a podium or lectern either. I think the movement looks a lot nicer than someone who is static and presenting.

I also loved the backdrop last year!

edrushka commented 7 years ago

My only pitch for a podium is that it gives us a chance to integrate some Mozilla/MozFest branding that's separate from the large stage backdrop.

For the archived D&D videos, we definitely want some consistent Mozilla branding. If this can be integrated into the stage backdrop, that works too.

Sorry, I'm still confused about what we're doing for the stages. Are we thinking both stages would be like last year? So one big printed backdrop and then two screens next to it for slides?

kristinashu commented 7 years ago

Or will Walker space not have a printed backdrop but just a projected screen? walker-space-philip-bloom

edrushka commented 7 years ago

I believe we want printed backdrops for both stages.

@Saallen can you confirm we have budget for both? @KevZawacki I know we talked about this at some point. Can you dig up the notes from our D&D design hopes/dreams convo?

KevZawacki commented 7 years ago

@edrushka @kristinashu

Where we landed: Both 2016 stages will look like 2015's main stage. So, the first image Kristina posted (printed backdrop, two screens, one comfort monitor*, etc.)

*This is important

Hey- since Sunday morning is being comletely rejigged. Do we need a full stage set up for 30 mins on Saturday morning? Do we need to stream this piece? What should that "area" "stage" look like when we only use it for 30 mins?

edrushka commented 7 years ago

If we have the budget, I do recommend that we still have a backdrop for the Saturday morning stage. There are so many photos published of that moment, it adds a tremendous amount of legitimacy to the festival to have that looking super-profesh. When the main stage is not in use, it functions as a popular space for photo ops.

Does the team working on the Generative Art Photobooth #143 have any updates? How are you thinking of using the space cc @mmmavis @Pomax @gvn

Saallen commented 7 years ago

Oh I forgot about this- my bad.

kristinashu commented 7 years ago

Are we thinking of having have the same size backdrop as last year? I believe last years was 4.87 x 3.35 m. Would this size fit ok in the Walker space?

I also want to confirm that we won't be having a podium, right?

KevZawacki commented 7 years ago

@kristinashu No podium. Re: stage dimensions, I defer to @Saallen

kristinashu commented 7 years ago

I've summarized info at the top of the design ticket https://github.com/MozillaFoundation/Mozfest2016_production/issues/103. We still need to confirm sizes but this is enough info to get started!
