Investigate and correct difference in donations number between GA and Salesforce

There have been some concerns on how consistent data between GA4 and Salesforce is regarding donations. For example, Dan created a report found here recently showing 70 donations in GA while Salesforce is showing over 488.

• Confirm if the event it’s been triggered correctly.
• Find the reason why of the differences between salesforce and GA.
• Implement a solution for this discrepancies.

Our site respects browser’s Do Not Track setting. It’s likely some donations came in from a browser with DNT set. However, I suspect the difference would be this big (70 vs 488). I wonder if our test donations reach to Salesforce and “pollute” the number? Despite all these possible causes, it’s a good idea that we look into the code to see if anything needs fixing.

Here I share an update about the research done so far to keep track of the progress.

• Digging first into GA analytics dashboard, I indentified some inconsistencies on the events name, compared with the snippets on the code that are tagging and creating this events once certain action is triggered, Eg. fundraise_up_modal_open, fundraise_up_modal_close , so this names did not matched up with events created using ReactGA.event()
• ReactGA.event() is optimized and was initially developed to be used with Universal Analytics which was already deprecated and replaced with GA4. Given these naming event limitation due to ReactGA there’s not a clear relation btween events and the triggers along the code. So in oder to update the implementation of GA4 will be necessary to replace all code snippets (mapped on this document ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FeUo7XPakpUxW0shIt1Mq_4b-fYWiGJYPXl7AJe5zUk/edit?pli=1&gid=0#gid=0 )) where ReactGA is used, for gtag. E.g: gtag('event', 'donate_button_tap', { event_category: 'donate', event_label: ${document.title} header });
• Regarding the first comparison between Salesforce and GA, Dan shared with me a report from SF, from an specifc range (Jul 28 to Aug 3) where the numbers were SF: 1,541 vs GA: 203. From this research I could highlight that removing the payment methods from ACH, Paypal and Credit Card in salesforce we got the same number of GA, suggesting those methods where not triggering the event, but this is still pending to validate with Dan on the wait for more data.
• Aditionally reviwing the code, I could identified the donation modal is implemented with http://fundraiseup.com ( http://fundraiseup.com|smart-link ), where all the workflow of payment is followed. The access to Fundrise was already requested in order to investigate this configuation futher.
• As an important observation, reading Fundrise docs they support a direct integration with GA only via GTM, what would be necesary to do in order to correct this issue and what also suggest the current differences due to a different integration.

Additional to the information shared on the previous comment, I add the following updates and observations to keep the context about this task updated.

• As part of the objective of the epic to which this task belongs to, a whole migration from GA events to GTM will need to be implemented, so a GTM container and account is needed.
• Inside of the analytics workspace, there were not a GTM container created before, however in the code there were indeed a code snipet from GTM, talking with Simon Acosta Torres it seemed that we did not have access to that account anymore, and the workspace where it may be is also unknown. For that reason a new GTM container was created an associated.
• Also in order to fix and correct the differences of Fundraise Up between GA and Salesforce, (being this the main purpose of the task), the way to properly integrate with GA is through GTM: https://fundraiseup.com/docs/google-analytics-4/ ( https://fundraiseup.com/docs/google-analytics-4/|smart-link )
