Description

What does it mean to work with a public space like a library, recreation center, or underutilized public space to #TeachtheWeb? Cities across the US are responding to President Obama’s Nation of Makers initiative. They are repurposing underutilized municipal assets and converting recreation and community centers into youth-centered, technology-enabled, maker learning spaces. For urban/rural populations that often lack reliable broadband service, these “Rec2Tech” transformations can increase digital literacy and cultivate STEM skills connected to their future employment.

This session will partner with other network leaders to examine how we can take best-practices in connected learning and traditional maker-spaces, and apply that to public, open, and municipal organizations. Participants will be better able to: Increase access to digital literacy tools and experiences for young people, Assess the feasibility of future innovative learning programming at public facilities, & Highlight the work of youth through celebratory events and programs.

Agenda

Facilitation partners will provide an overview of how they are transforming municipal spaces in their community, including Offices of the Mayor, Libraries, and Municipal IDs. This engaging and interactive workshop will use a HCD approach to examine how established programs working to #TeachtheWeb can take the successes/lessons learned from their own work and connect it to Rec2Tech. We will use current examples of space transformation to kickstart the conversation, then help participants design ways to build connections between existing programs and Rec2Tech.

Through a series of hands-on group exercises, we will determine how attendees can build on the wisdom of programs like the Chicago Public Library, Digital Harbor Foundation, and the Pittsburgh Roadmap to Inclusive Innovation and Performance. In the end, we seek to determine mutually beneficial ways to accelerate teaching and learning about space-transformation, and to expand the number of people who are able to democratize digital literacy.

Participants

The Learning Lab can function with two participants, or 25 participants because it is discussion and resourcing-based.

The first portion of our session will be done as one group, regardless of the number of participants.

The second portion can be adapted on the fly based on the number of people in the room. If we have a small number of participants we will work as one group; however, if we have many participants, we will divide people into smaller groups.

The Sprout Fund offers a variety of facilitation techniques and is very experienced in providing options depending on the group.

While some understanding of the work of the Mozilla Leadership/Learning initiative will be useful, it is not necessary in order to understand the individual activities in this workshop.

Outcome

Pittsburgh will be holding a Rec2Tech demonstration the week of September 12, 2016. Part of our commitment to the National Week of Making includes hosting a national convening in 2016-17. This session will inform and invite attendees to participate at that convening and at a second convening in Baltimore in 2017.
