Description

My idea is a small area installation that allows people to enter and feel the tension between our vanity and the need for privacy.

Agenda

The installation will be a curtained-off area that seems private. On one wall, several tablets and phones all on selfie mode will hang like photos with the viewer's moving image. Opposite the tablets and phones, a large mirror will reflect the viewer's image. The electronics show a "real" image, the mirror a "mirror" image. A camera near the mirror will broadcast the scene from inside the "private" booth onto a TV somewhere outside the booth—creating a situation where the viewer is both the unwitting star of the show and has their privacy violated at a time when looking at themselves in a mirror.

Participants

The installation is something people can walk through. Three participants would fit in the area at once. More than that would have to wait for the booth to clear to enter.

Outcome

I hope people would be able to feel that inner tug we all have between wanting to have a "personalized" experience, and wanting to remain "private" or "anonymous." This paradox is central to Mozilla's mission and business and something we all face in our daily connected world.

Physical experience with mirrors can be interesting. Keen to cross-work on this, and will also incorporate into MozEx wider interpretation. Probably more than 1 installation for this. Following sketches in Sept.

@thornet @techkim @MozExhibit Just wanted to second that this would be a perfect fit for demystify "hall of mirrors"... like, perfect, perfect. Let us know if there's an opportunity to host in our space.

Hi @omnignorant , fine with us! But we will add this into the MozEx programme too, as an external cross-space installation to look for.

@thornet can we confirm whether this is landing in ATOTC or Demystify? @Saallen is asking that we remove one label or the other and we'd really like to take it.

@thornet @omnignorant ...but this is an experience, so you could both set it up in your spaces I suppose...? Why not...

Just to clarify- the @MozExhibit label can stay but only one Space label should be on the issue. MozEx is using their labels also as a location tool as well as cuation

@Saallen @edrushka @omnignorant - Hi, can we please get a description for the mirror-area of this? We would like to add it to the MozEx catalogue-book. We also need an image, but we can just take a photographs using mirrors from our side now. We will keep Kevin Fann as the artist-designer for this - or are you seeing this as a collaborative piece with some other Mozillians now? If that's the case we need names. This is the only work that we don't have in the MozEx book-catalogue yet (we just remembered!) and we have the book-deadline on Thursday. Could we please get all these info asap?? @Saallen , could you then follow-up with us via email? Thanks!
