Description

My session introduces people to choreography as a tool for a wider conceptual, perceptual, experimental view of code on web-design practice. Choreography as way to rethink space, time, and composition structures in web environments. As rule-finding/rule-escaping activity, an instrument for questioning the conditions, protocols and procedures of composition processes in web-design. Choreography as a counter-move, a counter-apparatus, force reverted.

Choreographing code started as a cross-referencing of composition methods, with the aim to transcend the boundaries between the fields of choreography and web-design. A research (http://pzwart1.wdka.hro.nl/~jo/notebook/series/glossary.html) which led to the project: ‘A WebPage - In Multiple Acts’ an assemblage of graphic experiments in a live performance setting combining principles of choreography with the formal structures of coding.

Demo/Performance: previous eg..: (https://vimeo.com/172440461 and https://vimeo.com/175534187)

Workshop (or ‘Rehearsal’, a temporary stage for experimenting with web-design tools following choreographic methods/thematic concerns.). Previous eg..: (https://github.com/JoBCB/Choreo-Graphic-Coding_MediaLab).

The two formats can be scheduled in distinct moments.

Agenda

Demo/Performance: the choreographic code vocabulary brings a new meanings and produces a new imaginary around the act of coding. In a minimal set up, the liveness of coding allows for an articulation between choreographic concept in the written code and its expression the web interface.

The Workshop/'Rehearsal': an opportunity to share a cross-disciplinary exploration of choreography & code. This format is open to any participants curious to explore the use of choreographic techniques to generate newness in web-design, new modes of thinking composition matters, participation, relations and articulations between bodies and technologies. During the rehearsals, the participants will be presented to various choreographic references, examples of scores and scripts, and participate in basic movement studies. Finally all participants are invited to contribute to the choreographic code: by translating the ideas discussed into html/css/javascript functions.

For the two formats the main necessary equipment: a projector, a microphone, and speakers.

Participants

Demo/Performance: depending on the venue, it is important though that the audience is sitting or standing close to me (the performer) and the projection.

Workshop/‘Rehearsal’: around 12 people would be ideal.

Outcome

The Demo/Performance: an important point in developing this project as a live setting performance is the question of presence: being here and now. Breaking the distancing between mind/body, designer/audience, designer/design-piece, discovery/invention. This way, enhancing the idea of process over product.

The workshop/‘Rehearsal’: is a moment of shared construction of web-design compositions, which follows the traditions of coding collaborative practices. Just like in any choreography that can be re-interpreted, re-created and adapted. The code serves as a generative tool for new possible outcomes in the creation of web-design tools, scripts and graphics for interfaces and a way of playing with the choreographic logic. I believe after the workshops the discussion may grow into multifaceted results.

The notion of ‘choreographing design’ is a technical as much as sociable and cultural material which can be expanded both at the level of web-design as well at the one of choreography.
