Description

Some people just play computer games, but the real thrill comes from making your own. Using BBC micro:bit and and a visual programming language, will have you making and playing your own game in less than 60 minutes.

In this session we will build 2 projects using a BBC Micro:bit device. The first project will be to create a name badge and the 2nd will be to create a small game where two micro bits sync to play a game of Rock Paper Scissors.

We will introduce students to programming using a block editor at https://codethemicrobit.com more advanced student can convert this code into TypeScript.

Agenda

We have ran this session at numerous locations with groups of children including at Butlins amazing science weekends. https://www.butlins.com/where-to-stay-dine-and-play/where-to-play/microsoft.aspx

Participants

We have run this project with groups of 10 up to 100 the more children involved the more proctors we will need to provide.

Outcome

In partnership with the BBC there are many great tutorials on how to take the basic micro:bit and build more advanced projects. Since the editor we use creates TypeScript we see this project as potentially inspiring people to get involved in JavaScript development or look upon computer science as a more favorable career path.

Great to see this one under consideration. Although I'm tasked with running the social media in Youth zone, I might have to take part in this one myself! Hope to see it there!

Looks like an interesting session. @thebeebs what equipment do you have for this workshop and what do you require?

thebeebs commented 8 years ago

I can get hold of the Microbits and should be able to hire enough laptops for people to work on. The coding environment is just accessed through a browser. Other than power and internet there shouldn't be any special requirements (and since they are laptops... even power wouldn't be completely required)

@EPIKhub Seen a few micro:bit sessions - are these likely to be happening in the YZ? 'generic' micro:bit badge to cove these sessions?

EPIKhub commented 8 years ago

@mattdigitalme some of them yes, especially any that have the "Youth led" label

mattdigitalme commented 8 years ago

@EPIKhub sweet - will remove our label - and get a microbit badge set up for use in these sessions :)

Session accepted in the Youth Zone

How big is the youth zone. I'm looking at how many laptops/microbits I will need to source to support the event and how many proctors I will need.

HI All, Bit confused. The session doesn't appear on the site. https://app.mozillafestival.org/#_space-youth-zone I've ordered the Micro bits and Laptops. Just wondering if you still want me to do it?

Schedule is still in flux atm in the youth zone, but you are in there. How many laptops you bringing?

Thanks Dorine
