Title: Badge Pathways for Students
Description:
Our large, urban school district has been on the digital badge journey for the past five years and are recognizing student success via badging for a variety of skills and accomplishments. By sharing our journey, a consortium of districts in our county have come together to create badges that will hold certifications, prerequisites, and classes that student can use for future career advancement. Our goal to make education available to more students and to give the students control over the education is part of our general goal to provide a better educational experience for our community and students.
Agenda:
We will start by briefly sharing our implementation of badging for 3 purposes:
Recognizing student college, career, and life readiness; Community badging partnerships with local non-profit organizations; Using badges as the method of data collection for a grant with a consortium of 10 districts. We will then provide hands-on experiences for participants to use our 21st Century Badge Pathways open-source platform to create, issue, and display badges.
Questions are welcome throughout the presentation, and all resources are available online through either open-source or under a Creative Commons license.
Participants:
Participants can see how badges be utilized to motivate students from elementary schools to college and will be able to design and create a pathway and badges as an example on how this might work. The importance of controlling educational pathways is key! Participants can create badges that can eventually use within their own organizational systems. This session is valuable for a wide variety of individuals.
Outcome:
The goal is to connect educators in the process of creating badges and how they implement them in their educational systems. The network that can be created is a great resource where educators can share ideas and co-develop future educational badges that are transferable in an international educational community.
