[ Format ] demo, learning-lab, I think the presentation could be short, but there is enough material for a more in depth session, this would be preferred
Description
Digital networks are ever expanding. If tech companies have their way, the remaining white spots on the map will soon disappear, leaving no place on earth disconnected. The White Spots app and virtual reality series takes you on an expedition beyond the edge of the networked world and makes us feel what it means to live offline. The journey starts with a live visualisation of the networks around you. From there, a narrative unfolds that takes you from white spot to white spot. We cross virtual and physical borders and get to know strong characters and communities who have their diverse reasons for living outside of the networked world.
Agenda
The presentation will discuss these questions
What are white spots?
Where are the white spots?
What can we learn from white spots?
Who lives in the white spots?
Furthermore the session will investigate possible roles for data visualisation, virtual reality and crowd sourced journalism in trying to understand - and relate to - our technological condition.
Participants
Based on the composition of the audience we could focus the discussion on (data-) design, (data-) journalism, immersive storytelling and offline experiences in general.
Outcome
We hope to pitch the app to a new audience, get the audience familiar with the app and use it to add new contributions / offline experiences to the White Spots map.
Thanks for the submission! Unfortunately this session has not been selected as part of the program for 2016. Please expect an email from us with further information very soon.
