Description

I will talk about digital and (social) networks and how they impact people's lives. I will attempt to deconstruct the language of "cyber" and "digital" and present a framework in which to have conversations on these topics.

People's lives are undeniably changed by technology-augmented communication, but it's not such an extreme change. The digital social space should be regarded as an extension of social space and digital communication normalized as just another form of human expression.

The conclusion should be that we don't live in a digital world or cyberspace, just the space of human interactions, which just got expanded. This is important because the "digital frontier" is being exploited for profit and also political or military purposes; we should not forget that the rights of people (like privacy) don't end just because they get expressed in the digital domain.

Agenda

I will define terms, put things into historical context (a comparison with the printing press and early newspapers).

The presentation will have theoretical as well as practical examples and will end with possible visions for the future if certain actions are taken or not (i.e. a "good future" where privacy continues in the digital domain, a "bad future" of a hostile, militarized cyberspace with continued exploitation and human disengagement).

Participants

3 participants would mean a less formal discussion

15-25 people is enough for a formal presentation with questions and audience participation.

The bigger the audience, the less opportunity for individual questions, but audiences of all sizes should be suitable for this presentation.

Outcome

People should learn more about how to talk about social and rights issues as they pertain to technology. They should also manage to better demystify the language of those people or organizations who might want to "appropriate", fence off or close these new spaces just because there are technological means to do so.

Thanks for the submission Adrian! We're not selecting this for the Dilemmas zone as we can only accept a small number of proposals, and are focusing on experiences which explore the problems and hard choices that come along with IoT: https://mozillafestival.org/spaces-and-sessions#a-tale-of-two-cities:-dilemmas-in-connected-spaces
