Description

In our office, like in many others around the world, we have a table tennis which anyone can use. How does it impact productivity? Does playing tt make us more or less efficient? Is it a good way to de-stress? If so, how good is it and how much should we be playing? We attempt to find answers by wiring a table tennis and analysing data in real time. Big data and IoT come together to try to find answers to these and other questions regarding our office habits.

Agenda

We setup a ping-pong table, connect the rig to the internet and stream data to our servers. The table has a score board, push buttons for players to record each point; sensors record temperature, sounds, vibrations and luminosity. Players are given fitness trackers to record their heart beat rates and other bio-metrics. All this data is gathered and sent to a server were some magic happens and the results are then displayed on a public website. We can the use a projector or large TV screen to display the results. In an office environment the players would keep their fitness trackers the entire day and other data can be collected to measure the impact of a TT game has on productivity.

Participants

Participants can play TT matches against each other. Whilst the match is ongoing other participants can see the how the stress of the game and other factors impacts the bio-metrics of each player. The team will also engage with the participants to explain the purpose and the 'magic' behind the scenes, the technology we use to track our everyday life and how every one of our daily activities relate to each other.

Outcome

We want to raise awareness of the potential for this type of technology and how it can impact our lives. As algorithms take over to tell us what we like, dislike, how we should behave, what we should read, eat and wear it is more important than ever for people to question what and how data is collected and make informed decisions about giving it away. The IoT will let us track every aspect of our live, public and private -- even recreational activities. As such we have to question what the real value of IoT is and how to use it for meaningful impact.
