Description

Web literacy in schools is yet in its infancy. Our proposal is the introduction of a horizontal thread running through and bringing together the subsidiary activities for incorporating the Web into the educational system. This thread is being spun, colored, and woven inside the “Web workshop”. Its structure is related to: (a) the initiation of incorporated interventions for using the Web in individual classes and (b) establishing the new concepts that permeate these interventions (e.g. intercreativity). The Web workshop is the inspiration, quintessence, and glue of the post-digital school. The first step is to link the new concepts and issues that arise with the material taught, by trying to answer the question And now, how does that change... when living with the Web? The sections of the workshop address issues such as Hypertext, Participatory Algorithmic Thought, Online Goods, Collective Intelligence, Privatized Space, Identity, Cyber-crime, Openness and Neutrality and online Art.

Agenda

The basic idea is to initiate discussion on what and how should include on web literacy sections or courses. Can we have a minimum common content around the world? How Data or web science approaches can be useful on this agenda? My presentation will not exceed 15 minutes and will provide an initial context for exchange experiences and ideas on web literacy in action.

Participants

My goal will be to engage as many people as possible to discussions and interactions on web literacy content. Issues and questions will be moderated into groups related to my presentation.

Outcome

During 2016 has started an intensive effort to enrich the Greek schools with learning content related to open technologies and web literacy. Until today the school’s “computer lab” is a Microsoft-based set of computers accessed only by Computer science teachers. In addition, web issues are usually approached by phobic prejudgments, focusing on the problematic uses whilst paying little attention to the “making” culture. To reverse this situation, the Greek Ministry of Education established a Council responsible to submit proposals related to open technologies. Already, 22 schools have been equipped with Arduino, Raspberry and other open hardware. As the responsible person for web literacy in this Council I would love to get feedback, new ideas and collaborations on addressing the issues of open, neutral and creative web. There is great potential in building common grounds on web literacy with scholars around the world.
