Description

Open source open hardware system KORUZA is the worlds first wireless optical system capable of establishing a 1Gbsp or 10Gbps wireless optical connection between buildings. In presentation I will give a talk on how light can be used to send data and the opportunities that opens up. In hands-on workshop the participants will be able to play with the internals and learning about how they can 3d print the components and make a system like that themselves. Furthermore a simple low-speed version of KORUZA will be used to connect Arduino devices between them with light and thus empower the participants to begin thinking about light even for IoT applications. We will prepare a number of electronics sets to give away and let people play with them. During the event we would like to install a KORUZA link between floors and use it for sending some data or live stream.

Agenda

We believe it would be important to have a short demo or a lightning talk to teach a large number of participants about wireless optical communication and the unlimited bandwidth available with it.

In the hands-on session participants would get their first experience with wireless optical technologies and explore this through a guided design and hacking sessions, such that they feel empowered doing this on their own in new projects. The low-cost adruino-arduino demo would consist of LEDs and photodiodes with a simple library, allowing people to send UART data between them and effectively have some IoT communication.

Demonstrating a KORUZA link across the building between the floors would be an amazing demo of the technology itself and by adding some visible lasers for demonstration, getting the idea of wireless optical communication would be simple to get across.

We would accompany the demo with open hardware manufacturing machines http://goodenoughcnc.eu

Participants

Number of participants does slightly change the format of the hands-on session, primarily the less people there are the less guided and self-exploring the session can be. With 25 participants we will have a well defined workflow and some exercises everyone can complete in time.

Outcome

The outcomes for myself and our team after the event will be spreading the word about open hardware tech for wireless optical communication and the use or our system in many new locations and use-cases.

Participants will learn about wireless optical technology that is only now becoming a more popular topic and get their first steps into this field.
