Description

Participants will create 3D scenes using a game engine called UNITY (used for creating PS4 and XBOX ONE games), transform themelves into a supernatural being with costumes and facepaints, transport their characters into the scene using 3D scanning, and then explore the whole island through an Augmented Reality APP on an iPAD (similar to Pokemon GO!), while other participants create a digital soundscape for each participant's magic island experience.

Agenda

3-hour workshop for up to 5 young people aged 12+

Artforms: Shakespeare, Games Design, 3D Scanning and Augmented Reality.

Prospero, the great and powerful wizard from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, has a quest for you to bring magic back to the island where he used to live.

During this exciting new 3-hour workshop, you will meet Prospero on screen and work with his spirits (also known as digital artist Darius and theatre director Ben) to build your own part of the magic island.

No previous knowledge of Shakespeare or The Tempest is needed to take part in this workshop.

Technology used includes: Augmented Reality, Game Design, 3D modelling, 3D scanning and sound design.

Participants

This workshop will work best, we think, for about 5-10 participants, to ensure that the experience is not diluted and team work to create the island together can take place.

However, it could work with 3 participants or up to 15. There might be less for each participant to do is there are more than 10, but this should not be a problem.

Outcome

We will share the findings of the workshop with you and the participants with a view to developing it further after a comprehensive evaluation. We will invite participants to take part in our Digital Shakespeare conference in partnership between 1623 theatre company, QUAD arts centre, the University of Derby and the Shakespeare Institute in November 2017, to refine the workshop and offer it to other young people in the future through 1623's learning and participation programmes.
