Description

The new Web Animations API standards offer powerful tools for developers to use code to add animation to their web apps. But there's a lot more to this API than tools for programmers. There's new opportunities for artists and others to learn and use these digital tools for creative expression and fun.

Agenda

We start with an overview of digital and hand-drawn animation techniques. We show the new Web Animations API from a high-level and demonstrate its capabilities. We then show how artists can leverage the API (with code and with expressive tools) to achieve the animation effects shown in the overview. Hands-on hacking if time/space allows.

Participants

25 participants: we'll do the session described above, allowing time for Q&A.

15 participants: add a detailed tech talk into the API or hands-on hacking/creating on a single project template.

3 participants: add a very deep-dive into the API and hands-on hacking/creating on their own projects.

Outcome

We'll use the learning from this session to improve creative tools in Firefox. Participants take the learning forward to add digital animation to their repertoire and résumé.

@junglecode would you be able to let us know how focused your sessions is likely to be around the activity of animation as an art form, compared to the wider focus on the function of API? Thank you! @Artsaward

@Saallen have been unable to get hold of @junglecode via this platform or via email to have a discussion about the question above

Hi! Apologies for the delay. Two particularly interesting areas I plan to cover are the emotional and aesthetic effects that animation can have on an individual. I'll demonstrate how computer-generated animations can take on very organic properties that can evoke feelings of fun, melancholy, surprise, and suspense. I'll show how techniques from traditional hand-drawn animation can be a reference for programmed animations and still achieve the cinematic and artistic effects of the traditional art.

BTW, I was an Art Major in school who later became a Computer Scientist.

@Junglecode Hi Jet, thanks for your message and for the added detail, this sounds great. I will be back in touch later this week via email to follow up. Julie
