Description
Take part in a digital orchestra using iPads as sound makers. Shape the composition process, rehearse and perform a piece of music in one hour.
Regardless of age or ability participants will get a high quality musical experience and will develop their ensemble playing skills using the iPad as an instrument. They will learn the basics of musical arrangement, musical elements e.g. tempo, pitch etc. following a conductor as well as the basic knowledge in the use of a range of iPad apps for music.
Agenda
The facilitators will give an overview of the tasks and demo technology and musical elements. They will be setting fast paced engaging challenges, defining parameters for the piece, taking input from the group, working with those less confident/able with regards to musical skills and rehearsing the group ready for a performance at the end of the session. For up to 25 participants we will require 12 iPads for the workshop and several low cost apps such as Garageband, Bebot, Thumbjam, Madpad installed on them. We would also require X-mini/Betron speakers for each iPad.
(some of the above we can provide)
The lower age limit is 8 years old. The session could work with younger participants but they need to be working with an accompanying adult.
Participants
Both facilitators have extensive experience of working with a range of groups, from 1-to-1 to large groups of 30+. We are experienced with participants of all ages from 5 to adults and have experience with special needs participants too. The piece will be written and shaped from the input of the group and therefore can be scaled according to those present and their musical experience. Sharing of iPads for music making is no problem and with 12 iPads 25 should be easily accommodated. Voice is also something that we could incorporate into our composition to make the iPads go further.
Outcome
Participants will gain basic understanding of ensemble playing and the use of the iPad as a musical instrument, gain experience of using a range of musical apps and be inspired to explore music and technology further.
As part of the session we will give participants ideas of how to take their learning further and how they can get involved with further activities beyond the festival. The experience will give those taking part a foundation of working with iPads for music making, increasing their confidence and opening their eyes to the possibilities. We hope to inspire similar activities in schools and youth organisations and also pilot session with a cross generational element in order to run similar sessions in the future.
