Description
We'll unpack what 'storytelling' means, via a structured model, discussed here: https://medium.com/@r4isstatic/the-s-word-fe02b09541f#.h1kzc7wj1 and https://medium.com/@r4isstatic/a-three-part-model-for-understanding-stories-d0933f4d7460#.6vztqzkwx.
By looking at the techniques and craft of storytelling from TV, film and online media, we'll discuss what each technique helps achieve, why, and what equivalents might be found in online and digital spaces. We'll also consider the idea of 'structured journalism' and the Web as a medium for exploring hyperlinked narratives.
Agenda
There will be a short presentation/introduction to the three-part model for understanding storytelling, and the various factors involved. We'll look at a few projects that have explored structured narrative on the Web. Then we'll break into groups and discuss storytelling techniques and how they might apply in digital and online environments.
Participants
It should be relatively easy to break the number of participants down to decent sized groups. If there is a large number, we'll make sure to leave enough time for discussion & sharing between the groups by the end of the session.
If it's a smaller group, then we can get more heavily into whichever parts of the session people are most interested in.
Outcome
By explicitly calling out storytelling techniques, participants will emerge with a deeper understanding of how they can communicate information in their work, drawing upon those techniques in art, journalism and other areas. Attendees will also gain a more definite sense of what we mean when we use the word 'storytelling' in the tech, culture and journalism worlds.
