Description
Young participants will be able to build a robot from scratch using the Crumble Robot kit and instruction in pictures. When constructed they will write some code to get it moving. The final challenge will be to add a sensor and get it following a line.
Agenda
Two levels, firstly to construct a robot and getting it to move and secondly to add sensor and getting it to follow a line. Participants will need to wire up their robot correctly but close observation to the instructions and then to develop some simple lines of code using the Crumble software programme.
Participants
We aim to have 10 kits - so if participants work in pairs then that will cover up to 20 people. It's nice as a parent/child activity. There will need to be a 40 minute break between sessions to undo and re-pack kits for new group.
Each session should last about 1 hour.
Outcome
South London Raspberry Jam (SLRJam) has been going for a year delivering coding events for 5-15 yr olds in an autism and Tourette's Syndrome friendly inclusive environment. The Robot Hack using the Crumble Robot kit is a good session for our Young coders to facilitate and we want to give more SLRJam coders, this leadership opportunity. We have a great working relationship with the makers of the kit - Redfern and as the kits are quite cheap (£35) participants can buy their own kit. Alternatively it's a good entry level activity for building robots and getting into the more complicated ones.
At the end of the session, participants will get a really fun intro to robots, coding and using sensors. It's a lovely feeling when it all works too - a real sense of achievement.
