Description

Virtual Reality (VR) appears poised to affect the field of modern education, however, creating user-generated VR experiences requires expertise with graphic design, 3D modeling, video editing, and programming skills is too complex for most elementary and middle school teachers and students to take on. In order to make VR storytelling more accessible, we have created SocialVR: a browser-based interactive design tool that allows non-technical users aged 8+ to create personalized VR experiences. Using a simple browser, phone, and low-cost camera, individuals who otherwise would not have access to VR technology are equipped to build personalized immersive experiences using 360 photos and videos, text, and audio. Using these media primitives, users can create customized stories, games, and learning resources. During the demo and lightning talk, we will share several examples and demonstrate how to make a personalized VR experience. We will also build an example on site.

Agenda

We will give a brief talk and share several examples, and then create a live demonstration in the room. We will ask participants to contribute an audio clip, image, or text to add to the personalized immersive experience. We will then share the experience through a headset and connected screen.

Participants

We will give a talk, and then we will demonstrate SocialVR using 360 photographs that we will collect from the Mozilla Festival. Each participant will have the opportunity to contribute text, audio, or an image to add to the example we create on site. We would be equally comfortable with 3 or 25 participants and would divide the room into two groups to create different examples using the same media to compare what they envisioned and created.

Outcome

e hope to meet educators interested in using SocialVR in their classroom or after school programs. We also hope to brainstorm curriculum ideas and new ways to use SocialVR based on ideas generated in the workshop.

@EPIKhub okay thank you. Is it possible to still apply for a travel stipend? The tickets are getting more expensive here and we are not sure if the other grant we applied for will come through.
