Description

Education affects all of us - lifelong learning education is a standard, we all develop, progress and discover new things using various learning methods - the age doesn’t matter. Therefore copyright policy needs to empower – and not thwart – the activities of teaching and learning. While it is relatively well understood by the education community and institutions, there is low level of engagement in copyright reform debate of the open Internet movement. With participants of Mozfest we want to create an infographic to show challenges related to current copyright framework.

Aims of the workshop are to:

  1. Convince participants that copyright reform shall be a priority issue for everybody
  2. Engage people not involved yet in policy to support our call “Keep copyright out of classroom”
  3. Exchange experiences, gather new ideas to support Communia ongoing project “Copyright for education”

    Agenda

Hands-on workshop (2 hours long) will focus on modern and innovative education practices across Europe. What are our pioneers in education doing, and how do the copyright rules enable or hold back these innovative (open) education practices? During the series of various engaging tasks we’ll all try to evaluate if the copyright framework is properly shaped to strengthen digital, cross-border education. What changes should be introduced to make copyright framework more flexible and future-proof considering educational practices? The workshop will create a possibility to elaborate more on very particular aspect of copyright reform that shall be a concern for all internet users.

Questions: What were the primary educational activities 30 years ago? What are the educational activities today? What does current copyright law give us the ability to do with regard to teaching and learning? How does this match up with (or not) education activities of today (and the future?)

Participants

Since we will encourage people to share experiences and knowledge in small groups and only the presentation of results will take place on forum, we are able to accommodate the group of different size, ranging from 15 to 50.

Outcome

We will publish a blog post on the Medium “Copyright untangled” (the Communia channel on copyright for education) after the event with any outcomes of the session in order to share with others that weren’t able to attend. Moreover, we’ll promote an infographic created with participants to make people aware of copyright challenges. Participant of the workshop will be encourage to support the call “Keep education out of classroom” by engaging in policy debate on EU copyright reform. COMMUNIA advocates for policies that expand the public domain and increase access to and reuse of culture and knowledge. We seek to limit the scope of exclusive copyright to sensible proportions that do not place unnecessary restrictions on access and use - we need all hands on board. The examples gathered during the workshop will also help to build our policy narrative in ongoing project “Copyright for education”.

cc @omnignorant This could potentially be in the Demystify space -- depending on what sort of audience you think you'll have -- and be a part of a pathway across [at least our] spaces.

Hi, I will be running this session together with Natalia on behalf of COMMUNIA. we also have a second affiliation as Centrum Cyfrowe. can this information be added to the description? is it enough to file this as an issue or should I make a push edit to the description?

Hi @tarkowski This session will actually be a part of a larger session that is being facilitated by Raegan MacDonald. I'll forward you our schedule now. Thanks!
