Description

Will Lang, musician for Off the Beat, a Helix Arts project (Youth Music funded) would deliver a workshop around digital music collaboration. There are current frustrations and areas for experimentation around making and sharing music to further collaborate and create final pieces. This can impact on the quality of the experience for participants and audiences.

We want to do a remote/online experiment to explore the effectiveness of music making and digital sharing for a global audience in 1 or more of these areas: 1) Exploring ‘latency’ in ‘real-time’ music collaborations online 2) Understanding the challenges of live streaming for jamming between remote locales (tutorial to performance) 3) Experiment with musical segments//rifs to compose mixes using current technology/platforms, e.g. recent applications like Whole World Band

Q & A would be central to the experiment, giving us time to progress ideas, experiments could continue after MozFest weekend.

Agenda

We want to experiment with DigiLog ‘…the best of advanced technology for performance and analogue experience.’ Kevin Godley, Whole World Band.

We want to deliver remotely from Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project, home of ‘Off the Beat’. This would involve a workshop by artists and participants (Gold) to a remote Mozfest group. For example use of the voice (not singing!) as instrument and using existing material for collaboration to create a digital music composition - a Mozfest anthem!

Technically it requires devices for sharing e.g Laptop, internet. Contingency for lack of internet connection could be pre-recorded materials. This would limit the experiment, but we would plan for other options.

This could be done without Helix Arts staff at Mozfest to test the true model of remote groups collaborating without physical facilitation, but ideally we would have a representative at each end with it being experimental and to co-facilitate the Q&A.

Participants

The model of delivery is simple and scalable. The test is the digital collaboration and potential of this 1 to many or many to 1.

Approaches and timing may be adapted due to numbers, but otherwise the workshop can be delivered easily to scale.

The considerations would be around size of space and screen for the online aspect of sharing and the approach/structure and timings taken to the Q&A. ie sub groups or whole group discussion depending on numbers.

Outcome

Participants and content from the workshop will form a legacy to Off the Beat project and sub-regional project with international ambition and reach across the field of music.

Music created during the workshop will be featured into the Off the Beat project which will last until Spring 2018 and then hopefully beyond.

Any creative content will also feature on the Off the Beat virtual collaborators map, which has momentum of it's own.

Gold Arts Award young people at Off the Beat will build this into their ongoing Gold plans and future employability.

Findings from the experiment Q & A will help address the wider development for digital music making and collaboration and how Off the Beat shares the creative content being honed from participants.

Workshop participants can continue their relationship with the project and form part of the wider collaborating Off the Beat family!
