Description

This session is looking at the different problems research in different fields and making the data found be open to others. This particular session aims to allow participants to get together and discuss all of the various benefits and problems associated with keeping research data open, looking at the idea of Quantum Computing and all of its possible ramifications as an example for discussion to spring board from.

Agenda

As mentioned above this session aims to give out some information about the world of research and in particular quantum computing and then aims for the participants to see if there are any more problems involved with this area and how to keep it open and then come up with ways to solve these problems.

Participants

With small numbers of participants this session would run with all the participants in a single group with the facilitator all taking part in a group discussion. Larger groups could instead have the information introduced to them in a large talk at the start of the session and then split up into groups of 3-5 people to then discuss this with the facilitator going around individual groups to check on how things are going and possibly introducing other areas of discussion if groups run into problems with this, these groups could then possibly meet up at the end of the session to discuss the things they came up with either as once again a large group or people swapping groups to pass on their original groups ideas maybe with the creation of a poster as an aid to this.

Outcome

After the festival I think it would be great for the participants to be able to take the ideas they form back to their work if it is in the field of research and after identifying the problems that may have been raised in the discussions then apply the solutions to these or maybe possibly this just simply ends up with participants realising the importance of open science and data and hence encourage them to employ it in their work. If the participants are not researchers then hopefully this session will still allow them to leave with a better understanding of all of the problems associated with open science and hence a better appreciation of those who do research in such a way and maybe an idea of how they can get involved or help out.
