Description

The Museum of London has produced a Minecraft experience by recreating the City of London in 1666. The Museum of London has worked with some of the world’s best Minecraft professionals to create these maps, combining our knowledge and collections with their creative minds to bring history to life. In the session we will discuss some of the thinking behind the project, what it has been like to enter into the unfamiliar world of Minecraft and why it is such a powerful platform to use for digital engagement and learning.

Agenda

We could give participants the chance to play the game, playing through the stages of the fire and the opportunity to ask questions about aspects of the project. There will still be another map to be produced so we could gather feedback and ideas from participants about what they would want to see in the final re-building stage. We will hopefully have some of the builder team with us who can talk through the game from their point of view and offer advice to young people who would like to know more about doing it in a professional way.

Participants

The session can be adapted depending on the number of people, it will be about exploration of the game and learning about how cultural organisations can and have used Minecraft. the only limiting factor will be the amount of devices available to use.

Outcome

It is important to us to engage with the audience who would use these maps, often when a project like this goes live we don't get to interact directly with users. Understanding more about their interests and needs is important and giving them the opportunity to talk with us to feedback on our work. These interactions could help shape the last stage of the project and any other projects in the future, while also setting up important connections between the Museum and other communities.

For participants, hopefully they will take away that Minecraft is more than just a game, it is a learning tool, a resource, a creative space which encourages learning through play. Also that cultural organisations, such as the Museum of London, have vast collections that can help tell the stories of our past and present.
