Description

Short description:

• A 24h art-exhibit, full of rich media and findings from the DSO research, displayed creatively for “maximum wow”.
• Communicate in a lightweight, visually-stimulating manner.
• People can take their time to read, observe.
• It will be like a photo essay, but richer, and mixing media.
• At the entrance to the maze, acquire a low-end smartphone similar to those used by first-time users in Kenya and gain an appreciation for their common line of thinking
• Pick up, play with, and attempt [scripted] daily tasks with the smartphone on your journey through the maze, and illustrate, photograph, or otherwise record the experience
• Post experiences throughout to gradually accumulate a “wall of discovery”

  Agenda

• How is it participatory? What does your audience do? Like a museum exhibit, people read posted info in each section and enjoy the media there. Questions posted throughout ask people to scribble an answer on a wall, or talk about about themselves as users with other people that are around. People are also forced to engage with low-end Kenyan phones by pairing up and receiving a script with tasks like:
• Install this app: (facebook, instagram)
• Go look for this content
• Find a job
• Apply to university

Material needed: photos, audio, video, shitty phones, surveys, paper…. For the exhibition: a wall with cardboard (like last year but bigger) + printed photograhs + printed text + Kenyan things (like a market) For the interactivity: tablets to display audio and video + earphones For the Day in a Life: Phones, audio recording devices, pen and notepads

Looking at this as a cross-space piece. The documentary development could also fit with Journalism, so we could consider the cross-exhibit. Following up soon.

Hey @MozExhibit we have an exhibition design in mind, and it will primarily be print. We are still working on the scope and budget and plan to send something to you and Sarah asap.

Do we have an idea of how much space there will be for us to install visuals ?

The work will likely look like photographs with text legends that tell a story. We will cluster them by themes.

@MozExhibit answered by email for some more detail, but ideally we would print out some large photos from laura's collection and show them in a small space with captions and small ways to engage.
