Description

This session introduces WebVR and how to start developing virtual reality applications using the web browser. We’ll share some of the possibilities and develop a rapid prototype through simple markup, using A-Frame.

Agenda

We would bring along some VR phone mounts such as Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR. We can use these to demo - or in the case of a small workshop - to lend/give to people for hacking. We are imagining this session as being suitable for those with some web development knowledge already, although we will be prepared to tailor it to the audience's level and also to work best for the preferred format.

Participants

For a workshop, we would have pre-prepared material available online/offline for all participants so that they could speed ahead of the rest of the group, or catch up, as desired. We would probably start with a very simple template that participants could copy or fork. The idea would be to make a simple, working VR app, then help people to start extending and customising it.

Outcome

We hope to inspire participants about the potential for VR and to give them the ability to dive in and create their own experiences during and after the event. Participants should also come away with an understanding of the WebVR API and some of the available choices for libraries and tools, to make development easier.
