Description

This session would be intended for an effort to bridge Art and Technology where participants will build a fairy stick like thing which will take gestures as input and create beautiful patterned art on computer screen.

Whole arrangement of this system will consist of a transmitter and receiver. The transmitter (The fairy stick) consists of an Arduino interfaced with accelerometer and RF transmitter. An accelerometer provides 3-axis data relative to gravitational acceleration (however we only need to extract x-y axis data in order to control the mouse cursor). The receiver (computer) consists of RF receiver and Arduino (we will use Leonardo for session) which can take over the computer cursor. Once the user presses a button on transmitter side, the computer cursor perceive it as a mouse click and a beautiful pattern is generated on computer screen (which is actually responding to gesture along with button press on transmitter side).

Agenda

Agenda :

  1. Introduction of what we are going to make today : Understanding the physical v/s virtual world and bridging the gap with interactive work. Then Demo of a working fairy stick.
  2. The Software: Introduce of Processing software (which will be used to generate beautiful patterns). Processing is java-based sketchbook software for coding within computer visual arts using which participants can generate animated text & visual with simple java-based syntax.
  3. The Hardware: We will provide kits & then given hands-on exercise for each component's testing with examples.
  4. Getting things together: We will provide step-by-step procedure to participants to teach them to establish wireless communication between handheld electronic stick & computer and then to generate and control the visual art on screen. The visual art will be most interesting part which will respond to the hardware which is communicating wirelessly.

    Participants

We will have 8 kits ready with us, based upon number of participants we can divide then in groups of maximum 3-4 each (a good combination of team members could have 1 person interested in software, one interested in hardware and one interested in art). As we are two facilitators, we can easily handle 3-4 groups at given time.

Outcome

  1. Participants will get an understanding of interfacing methods between physical world and computer world with gesture input. Such skills are really helpful to work around computer imaging and digital art. The ultimate goal is to combine these two different worlds into one as an art form.
  2. Methods and skills learned in this session would open-up participant to further experiment their creative thinking, for example : stick can be replaced with geometry tools (think inside/outside geometry box) or Vajra (Hindu god handheld tool for thunderbolt). They would be able to represent some complex sociological issues, environmental problems including but not limited to digital art, it could be further explored in computer augmented reality.
  3. Based upon the inputs provided by participants, we can collaborate further to extend the scope we are applying these skills.

This person has been chosen to attend with the Participation team as a MozFest Contributor. So they no longer require a stipend.

As everyone's label has been removed I will short list this session for the youth zone

gurumukhi commented 7 years ago

Can I expect a mail if this session has been accepted?

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

@gurumukhi yes in the youth zone:)

gurumukhi commented 7 years ago

Hi @EPIKhub, Thanks for clarifying this :) 👍

Will you be sending me a mail with more details? The co-facilitator of this session (Prasan Dutt) needs to apply for Visa (so better to apply sooner), and he needs stipend too as he is not selected as volunteer.

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

@gurumukhi as per my email - we cannot offer a stipend for co-facilitators, stipend awards are always for 1 person per session submision and you was awarded the MozFest contributor community stipend. Please let me know what you want to do with your session.

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

As the session has a co-facilitatator that still requires a stipend this session is not able to take place
