[ Format ] Fringe Event in London -- a Hackathon w/London-based members of the Open Data/Open Minds team

Description

This is a fringe event also serving local organizers, designers, developers, and people interested in integrating publicly available civic data with open hardware and hackable, paper-based learning materials.

This workshop builds on a notebooking project that uses an IoT board with Wi-Fi to access NOAA.gov and display tidal information in real-time whenever the journal is on a network. The workshop draws on further interface and platform development by researchers from Manylabs.org, an open science initiative in San Francisco, and engineers in London who developed the Think With Google conductive notepad. Participants will collaborate with the ODOM team on preliminary designs for a circuit board that connects selected data feeds to a set of project cards which use conductive inks and breakout connections to allow users to curate digital feeds for delivery in paper-based projects. Participants will prototype notebooks like these during the workshop. For an overview see:

Agenda

We will share progress and use the hackathon to explore further requirements for components, connectivity, and use scenarios such as introductory quantified self measurement, local/global environmental information, and smart city data. Participants will be organized in groups to complete demonstration projects and offer feedback. Depending on participants’ areas of interest/expertise, we may focus groups on different tasks – information architectures for data mgmt. and web dashboards, learning scenarios for teachers and students, user routines for resource materials, and community engagement strategies and data requirements for localization.

Participants

As this will be a hands-on hack event we would want to cap participants at 20 to allow for good collaboration and structured feedback. We will share details on the hardware, data protocols, interface, and instructional design principles we’re working with, and organize group activities around a set of user stories and design challenges.

Outcome

The promise of Open Data/Open Minds is two-fold: 1) making open data useful for learning in accessible, illuminating, and inclusive ways which align craft, data literacy, computational thinking, community engagement and student voice with the open web; 2) supporting the network of practitioners and projects curating and publishing open data. We are focusing on connections between the physical and the digital – between the familiar rituals and routines in paper and notebooks and our comparatively new fluencies with personal devices and networked services. Open Data/Open Minds uses open data to create relationships between individuals and their communities. We see members of the Mozilla community as natural leaders and ambassadors for these ideas and practices. We’re eager to connect with Mozfest participants interested in the project. The ODOM team will use feedback from the session to guide next steps; we hope participants will become part of network as the program develops.

@Saallen Fringe event. Which/any space/label for this?

david-cv2 commented 8 years ago

Thanks for the considering the event and the label/space designations. The collaborators in London, the folks we'd be working with to identify the venue and present the session, are: 1) Louis Mustil, Arron Smith: Artists & Engineers 2) Roland Ellis: Somerset House and Makerversity

Hey @david-cv2 - If this is a Fringe Event taking place outside of MozFest, please submit it here and we can add it to our website.

Thanks, Marc, for the info on Fringe Event details. I'll verify with the team members in London and complete the form.
