Description

The session title refers to a paper engineering prototype – a fold-up paper panda in a science notebook that uses a micro servo to control the motion of its head in response to data from sensors reading the air quality levels in Shenzen, China. The Coughing Panda is a demonstration project that showcases how we use can work with data to create simple paper-based projects and visualizations using low-cost materials and components (LEDs, batteries, microcontrollers, sensors, copper tape, wifi and BLE dev boards). Part of a larger initiative, Open Data/Open Minds, we’ll talk about working with data feeds, figuratively concentrating a fire hose of data into an actionable IV drip, so information of all kinds can be purposefully and delightfully integrated into personal projects that combine scientific inquiry, systems thinking, design principles, literacy, community engagement, and STEM- and STEAM-based learning.

Agenda

Because we’re connecting crafted objects and physical materials with networked, digital data, we’re focused on the APIs and read/write protocols that will allow people to access curated data feeds and then develop and share their own. This interaction requires input devices, connectivity, web platforms and output materials. In this Learning Lab presentation we will share our approach to developing project materials and a scaleable data system to support these interactions. We will share examples of prototypes and present use cases for consideration.

Participants

The session will be run as Learning Lab, so it can easily handle small or large groups. Sample projects and their data feeds and resource materials will provide material for conversation and discussion.

Outcome

Participants will leave with plans for their own Coughing Panda notebook project or a similar, prototyped build connecting their notebooks and interactive designs to open data. We are eager to make these tools and resources available to the Mozfest community as part of an updated ‘Hack Your Notebook’ curriculum module after MozFest, as well.

Wondering if youthzone would be interested too? Will put it in consideration for the garage and garden zones

david-cv2 commented 8 years ago

Appreciate the comment! We'd be happy to present in the youth and garage zones. The work grows out of a series of paper-meets-electronics projects and prototypes that started with the Hack Your Notebook Project and continues with the data integration through the Open Data/Open Minds initiative. Related URLs are listed below. We've worked with Chibitronics as we've developed the program -- we use their circuit stickers in our activities -- so the project is well aligned with Jie Qi's research.

Thanks for considering the session.

@EPIKhub @arlissc did you all decide to accept this session? if not, we will. but no worries if yes.

EPIKhub commented 8 years ago

@thornet sounds like an awesome session, glade you want to accept it, ill remove our label :)

@thornet thanks for the update! Putting @chadsansing on this thread as well.

I have been in touch with the London team on the Open Data/Open Minds project; there are some updates on their details in the fringe proposal . Let me know if you want/need more info.

Lastly, the scrapbooking idea has had an update with the materials -- attaching below a version of the PDF created for a Literacy/Civic Engagement project (www.letters2president.org) in case this idea holds interest. I saw Jie Qi in CA last week and there's a possibility of collaborating with her on this as we work with her stickers for the storytelling sections in the template.

Lots of details. Thx for considering and tracking them. Let me know what I can provide to help sort out questions.

@thornet - this is a great session - if you are willing to take it than we would hand it over to you. Can that happen ?

cubicgarden commented 8 years ago

OpenScience can you remove your label please?

arlissc commented 8 years ago

@cubicgarden - it is done. Thanks for the ping. We are interested in this session as well so will be watching how it unfolds. :)

Thank you, Mozilians, for your interest. We're excited to be able to share with you and your community.
