Two facilitators in this session will be in the project mentorship program (Anderson & Kristyn)
@acabunoc can you confirm whether this session still needs a stipend or not? It will help the curation process for @omnignorant
A stipend would be ideal, but I'm sourcing additional funding if @omnignorant is short stipends!
Thanks for the submission! Unfortunately this session has not been selected as part of the program for 2016. Please expect an email from us with further information very soon.
I'll be merging this session with others from the mentorship program! Thanks
Hey @omnignorant! The two facilitators are confirmed to be attending MozFest. It would be great if this fit in your space!
Let me know if you can accept this in 'Demystify the web'. If not, I can merge this with another session.

Description
How can open source applications can support communities in organizing and preserving their own history through storytelling? In this session participants will learn how we repurposed a number of open source applications to address gentrification in Detroit through our App, Detroit Music Box.We will share how we build the app and the various strategies we used for community engagement. Finally participants will get a chance to use Music Box, interacting with a mobile kiosk, record their thoughts and stories about the first time you stepped online and how that has changed and or evolved.
Agenda
We will start the session by sharing our work with wireless mesh networks, specifically going into how local applications can live on these mesh intranets. The we will share our simply constructed localized application, Detroit Music Box. This app offers a digital space for long time detroiters who are experiencing gentrification to share and archive stories about place and space. We will share how we facilitated community engagement, organizing storytelling events and mobile based storytelling abilities. Finally participants will be able to interact , share , and gather stories for a mobile Mozfest Music Box kiosk.
Participants
The demo and the discussion could really facilitate any size group as long as we can be heard and our video screen can be seen.
Outcome
participants will be given tools to identify a problem or need in a community which then can be supported by organizing and utilizing open source applications. Participants will be exposed to different open source resources like Turnkey linux and apply that knowledge to their own projects Participants will be able to download Music Box and customize it to use in their own community.
