[ Submitter's Name ] Geoff Millener [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] The Public Education Foundation - Chattanooga, TN [ Submitter's Twitter ] @gmillener

[ Space ] science [ Secondary Space ] demystify

[ Format ] demo, learning-lab, (We think a Learning Lab would be the best fit, but we'd also love to add a demo and lightning talk if there's time.)

Description

We will introduce the group to two technologies being piloted through Mozilla Gigabit Community Fund grants in Chattanooga, Tennessee and enable participants to imagine how these technologies might work in their own communities - either by scaling out existing pilots, or reimagining uses for the infrastructure.

The 4K microscope, in partnership with USC and with the support of the Mozilla Gigabit Community Fund has put research grade advanced microscopy tools in the hands of high schoolers, increasing access to and engagement with substantive scientific inquiry.

For the second pilot, which builds off of a tourism-focused Nokia project using advanced broadband to display Tennessee Aquarium exhibits to city visitors, we wondered what would happen if we took that streaming content (currently of an alligator bayou) and piped it directly into K-8 classrooms. Working with teachers and biologists, we’re developing open-source curricular modules for use in learning spaces across our school district.

Agenda

Through narratives from the pilot projects, participants will understand these new models and the tools that enable advanced broadband to improve education outcomes. We will invite the group to think about how this technology could make a difference in their own learning communities, expanding the scope and impact of these projects. Participants’ varied backgrounds and skillsets will ensure an expert, holistic exploration of the possibilities and potential.

What can students do with unfettered access to resources they might never otherwise encounter? How can students leverage that access for their own inquiry and research? How can it inspire more students to pursue education and careers in the sciences? What might these projects, currently scaling across a district of 43,000+ students, look like with students collaborating across the globe? How can we improve access, equity and education more openly? These are all questions MozFest participants are uniquely positioned to answer.

Participants

The discovery and brainstorming process is well suited to any size group, our hope is that we will have both technologists and educators joining in discussion, and while a large group would absolutely provide a lot of valuable input, a more intimate discussion could be equally powerful.

Through Andrew’s technical expertise and Geoff’s work in education and community-building, we’re prepared to tackle this process from a number of angles, and engage participants on multiple levels.

Outcome

We are committed to seeing these projects scale, and will foster connections and collaboration with the parties represented in the discussion. We are eager to see how other communities with different assets might make use of these technologies to affect change in their education systems, both formal and informal, as well as contribute to the global community. Leaning particularly on the Open Science network, we think there’s tremendous potential not just for scale, but in developing and sharing content and in connecting younger learners in authentic scientific inquiry.

Our other hope, especially as more and more communities adopt advanced broadband networks, is to do more of our work in partnership between cities, applying for the spring Mozilla Gigabit Community Fund cohort with another community. The relationships fostered by the festival will also be crucial to scaling and broadening the impact of these projects.

@techkim - this is a great session - e are getting quite full but we know these folks and they are a good group. Where are your thoughts on this one ? Would you be able to accept ? Happy to discuss this with you.

Hi @arlissc we ❤️ these guys! Of course, they made it to our shortlist! However, we have a limited number of stipends and unfortunately, we cannot accept this session unless some space frees up. Happy to take if you can provide the stipend requested!

Unfortunately this session will be unable to make it to MozFest this year. Hope to see you next year !
