Description

In this hands-on workshop attendees will learn to create interactive posters with circuitry on paper and make them come to life with Arduino programming!

We will be using circuit stickers to build expressive circuitry on paper and introduce a new programmable microcontroller clip for the code. We will be using an online browser-based Arduino programming platform and participants can program the clips with their laptops, tablets or even cell phones.

Our goal is to introduce beginner circuit builders and programmers to the magic of creating technology through arts and crafts. Participants will get to have fun designing, building and coding electronics while making unique and expressive works of art!

For an example of programmed paper circuitry artwork, check out this interactive painting: http://technolojie.com/pu-gong-ying-tu-dandelion-painting/

Agenda

We will start with a brief introduction to paper circuitry for inspiration. Then everyone will create a light-up name tag. Using this name tag, we will introduce programming by making the name tag blink with the code clip.

Once everyone has the basic circuit and blink code down, we will introduce the open ended poster activity: create a poster that illuminates your world.

Participants can work as individual or pairs to create the final poster project.

We will conclude the workshop by hanging the posters up around the room for a mini poster exhibition/show and tell.

Participants

This session can be run for small or large groups and there is no experience with electronics or programming necessary! We will bring plenty of circuit stickers and supplies. In the case that we get more participants than expected, we can do the activities in groups.

Outcome

We hope to get creators of all ages and backgrounds excited about expressing themselves with circuitry and code. Whether it's a young learner just getting started with making, an artist getting introduced to technology or an engineer experimenting with art, everyone is welcome and there are so many dimensions to explore! Educators may also enjoy the experience as inspiration for hands-on, interdisciplinary learning that spans art, engineering and even writing.

More concretely, in addition to the beautiful poster exhibition, through the workshop we will have taught participants basic circuitry and programming with Arduino. We will also provide a list of resources so that participants can continue to explore on their own at home and share/teach others as well as links to online galleries to see what others have created. The posters of the workshop will be documented and shared on an online gallery as well, to inspire creators beyond the workshop!

This looks lovely! Ill have one for my house! :)

jieq commented 8 years ago

Thanks! We hope you'll be able to join us and create your own (if our workshop makes it :)

For the title, we'd like to use "Programmable Posters with Paper Circuitry"

I think this might work really well with a session we are accepting Magic Island https://github.com/MozillaFoundation/mozfest-program-2016/issues/294, what do you think?

jieq commented 8 years ago

The themes could go together nicely! Making paper posters come to life with circuits would be even more magical with an augmented reality world on top of it. I can also imagine participants adding circuitry to their costumes or even face paints.

I'd recommend making the workshops themselves separate so that learners get plenty of time to learn the new technical skills and play around (putting together physical electronics, programming, 3D game design and augmented reality seem a bit much to cram into one activity!)

One idea is to have the posters workshop before, so that the finished posters can then be used as props or scenery for Magic Island.

Ok would like to add you to the track for VR/AR taking place in room 213 at the festival this year. I would also like to draw on your expertise further, this would also work really well with a book binding session we are doing for the librarian track. That said, we really need to have a Skype call now as my original decision dint include a Stipend request as part of it. Ill email separately

ArtsAward commented 8 years ago

Happy for this session to go over to Youth, I would love to make an Arts Award connection though! @EPIKhub

jieq commented 8 years ago

Cool! We're flexible and happy to figure out how to include different themes/tracks!

jieq commented 8 years ago

Hooray! Thank you! I'm free all Friday this week. My skype contact is jie.qi1.

Also, don't worry about the stipend- it would be nice to have but I don't want to take away the opportunity for someone who may need it more! I'll figure out travel on on my own here :)
