Description

Concept: online/hybrid platform that provides access to digital literacy and design skills for underserved student.

Since 206 I have been working with highschool students who are passionate about art and design but struggle balancing their passion with their daily life; they have school, jobs, and sometimes kids of their own.

Current traditional educational models don't support underserved highschool students in terms of accessibility, cost of education, and schedule of programs in relation to their personal lives and economic struggles.

In 2012, the National Endowment for the Arts study addressed the importance of Intensive Arts Education in relation to college access, persistance, and completion. We need a paradigm shift that transforms institutions' mindsets, and that allows students to adapt to new learning environments that prepare them for future job.

This session will allow participants to get a taste of a hybrid course, and produce a design piece, with a face-to-face component.

Agenda

This framework speaks to a diverse group of young adults who are creative in various fields and aims to develop a sustainable ecosystem that allows flexibility, and a sense of accomplishment by attaining competencies and building skills.

In this workshop, participants will work on separate computers (either as individuals or teams depending of amount of participants) in order to review support materials, read through an assignment brief task, and produce a design project. Then, participant(s) will post both process photos and reflections to a centralized Learning Portfolio platform, setup beforehand. Produced work will be shared, and celebrated, with the group at large as a Share-out format. See a Learning Portfolio class format here: http://portfoliospace2015.tumblr.com (Participants will only review one section)

Participants

Depending on amount of participants, they would work individually or in teams with various roles.

Outcome

This workshop would serve as a great pilot for assessing the effectiveness of the Learning Portfolio in delivering clear content while also providing tangible evidence of learned competencies and skill-building through work productions. Participants will get a badge based on their learned skill/competency.

I will further this project at Parsons the School of Design during Spring 2017, and would be using collected results to refine the course structure, in also thinking to adapt new open-source technologies to better support the learning experience.

The work done by the students are amazing love their content @ArtsAward might this be interesting for you? The focus in the Youth Zone is to help our youth have a voice as a celebration of youth culture by youth sharing with us all their passions; what I would be interested in, is inviting those youths who have created portfolios on your system to come share with us at MozFest. Could we start a conversation about that aspect maybe?

leaving a note here from the facilitator- they might be able to get funding through work for travel expenses

Yes, let's start a conversation about inviting students to share the work they have produced in the Learning Portfolios at the Youth Zone... Would be amazing!

Hi Niberca, Thanks so much for submitting a session for the Mozilla Festival. This year we had unprecedented numbers of submissions but sadly we are unable to accept all those who have requested a travel stipend in order to come. We'd love to include your session in the Digital Arts and Culture Space, but I would need to know if you are able to cover the costs of your own travel and accommodation on this occasion. Please let me know! Thank you @ArtsAward
