Description

We will explore how JumpStart is using different media formats (games, infographics, factographs, interactive data-visualizations, radio, and animation) to discuss data-rich stories about gender bias in education, employment, and even at birth. We will show how a broad, multifaceted, and creative approach to data journalism can reach larger audiences.

Agenda

We will discuss the data environment, the editorial process by which we determine the story/angle, and the how we decide on the format of the story as a team, inclusive of journalist, designers, and programmers at JumpStart, as well as tracking the impact (social media analytics).

Participants

I imagine the audience to break down along gender lines, but also by data, analysis, and communication (format of final story). I am prepared to respond to questions along each of those tracks. If data, then we can talk about the data landscape in Georgia in regards to approaching gender bias from different angles. From an analysis, what data are we combining to look at the issue: sometimes it is one dataset, sometimes we combine two to tell a story. For the storytelling audience, how we choose a format and how we implement it will be of interest and I am ready to discuss this process, too, including the constraints and obstacles we face.

Outcome

I and JumpStart are always open to sharing what and how we do our stories. We are happy to provide any information related to the data, analysis, and storytelling or even workflow and management processes. We are also eager to work and partner with other organizations.
