Description

What is Unicode? What is its relationship to Emoji? What's the history of ASCII?

Three years ago I wanted to type a symbol which didn’t exist. We all know there has been an explosion in the number of characters and emoji within Unicode. But how do those characters get in there? What’s the process for getting new symbols in? Is it even possible for a normal person to do this?

The forthcoming release of Unicode 9.0 contains 4 (and a half) new symbols - ⏻ ⏼ ⏽ ⭘ ⏾. Can’t see them? Upgrade your system :-) or install the font from http://unicodepowersymbol.com/

This is the THRILLING story (no really!) about where Unicode comes from. Why it exists. How you can change it. And the Poo Emoji. Always the Poo Emoji.

In short - learn how to create new symbols & emoji for Unicode.

Agenda

I’ve given versions of this talk and it goes down really well. Lots of audience participation. Covers the history of ASCII and why things are the way they are. Accessible for all skill levels.

Option for no slides - can done on a whiteboard, with Q&A throughout.

You can read the original proposal to Unicode at http://unicodepowersymbol.com/

The symbols are released in June/July 2016 - so should be well embedded by the conference.

You can see a selection of my previous presentations & my TEDx talk at https://shkspr.mobi/blog/speaking-engagements/

Participants

3 - general discussion, explain the history, brainstorm new symbols. No slides, all whiteboard.

15 - as above but more structured Q&A session and PowerPoint.

25 - as above but opportunity to split into groups for brainstorming.

Outcome

1) Learn the history of Emoji. 2) Convince font makers to add new symbols to their fonts. 3) Work with the Unicode consortium to add new symbols for future releases. 4) Lots of giggling at the 💩 emoji.
