What will happen in your session?

Kade, the founder of Aletheia will talk about the problems in academic publishing that gave rise to Aletheia and describe what Aletheia is, an opensource decentralised and distributed database and how it solves some of the problems in academic publishing. He will then take people through installing and using Aletheia if attendees have laptops on them, and the session will end on a call to action on how people can support and contribute to Aletheia as part of the opensource community.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

People will have a better understanding of the flaws in scientific communication, will be introduced to some technical concepts that can be applied to address these problems, and will be left with clear pathways to contribution should they want to get involved themselves.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Would be good to have a projector to show slides but presentation can be given without if need be.

Hi @KadeMorton , my name is Kasia and I work on Mozilla’s Internet Health Report. At Mozfest we will be present with an “Internet Research Hub” #618 (last comment) - an easy-going, cozy space for discussions and networking both with us about Internet Health and among researchers themselves.

We also invite anyone who does work in an Internet research field to sign up and present their work at a couple of open display tables we will have in the hub. If you would like to present something in the Hub in addition to your official session, let me know! We will promote these sessions throughout the festival. You can sign up spontaneously with pen and paper on site or if you would like to save a spot beforehand, drop me an email at kasia@mozillafoundation.org with a short description of the session.

In any case, I would like to invite you to pass by the hub and say hi. We will start with an informal "Research and coffee grinder” get-together at the beginning of the festival where people can get to know each other. Space and exact schedule for the Hub are still being decided and I will update you once we know the details. Hope to see you there!

My session will cover problems in academic publishing, what Aletheia is, how it's applicable to the problems in academic publishing, how Aletheia is different from existing forms of open access, and finally how people can contribute to Aletheia or just open access in general. I have planned the session to be 1 hour,
2. Nothing else but what to check the types of cords available? My laptop only has usb and thunderbolt ports
3. No modifications to my session proposal

Decentralising academic publishing with Aletheia

Participants will explore the problems in academic publishing and how a decentralised open source publishing platform called Aletheia can help build a healthier ecosystem. This session would be applicable for anyone interested in emerging technologies being applied to academic publishing, or practical applications of blockchain past financial technology. There may be chocolate involved.

For additional materials, would it be possible to have a table that everyone could sit down at?

@KadeMorton Cords, I would bring HDMI and VGA adapters if possible, don't rely on there being one spare. Table wise, the space has lots of chairs and tables can be pulled out and used. You can build the space before the session to suit your session
