[ Additional facilitators ] Lars Shillitoe,Björn Shillitoe

What will happen in your session?

A Mozfest badge hack. Bringing a hands on rock, paper, scissors Mozilla club experience to Mozfest. BUILD_CREATE_REMIX ON THE OPEN WEB Participants will remix their Mozfest Badge with an interactive DIY kit to create, print and share rock, paper, scissors icons or their own emoji pixels. They can hack them with paper circuits, led stickers, leds and more to create their own swag.

Inspired by Thorsten Goldberg’s legendary Berlin installation- ROCK PAPER SCISSORS OPEN WEB will leave a mark on the conference badge allowing participants to find new ways to connect and participate on the open web.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Participants will engage with web literacy skills: read, write, participate and experience the MakersJam Mozilla Club, Switzerland at Mozfest 2017. By designing and printing 8x8 pixel emoji stencils to print and light up on their conference badge they will have opportunities to bring their emojis to the open web via Chad Chansings #althestickerz webmaker project and extend this further by creating programmable wearables, via the Raspberry Pi sense hat or Arduino DIY gamer Participants will learn how simple 'hands on' kits can invite curiosity and provoke inquiry, leading to a deeper understanding of web literacy and the open web.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Two long workshop tables Large Mozfest cardboard boxes x8 Projector if possible a monitor with HDMI to connect a Raspberry Pi.

Time needed

All weekend, as an installation, exhibit or drop-in session

Hi @Shillontheroad, thanks for your proposal, this sounds great. Our Web Literacy space team will be back in touch a little later with any questions about the session. Please let us know on this thread if you need to know anything from us in the meantime! @MarianaDelgadoG

ArtsAward commented 7 years ago

Hi @Shillontheroad we thought it might be useful for you to take a look at the Mozilla Web Literacy framework to help shape your thinking around the Rock Paper Scissors session and its outcomes: https://learning.mozilla.org/en-US/web-literacy

shillontheroad commented 7 years ago

Hi @ArtsAward thanks for the message. I'd like to raise awareness if the web literacy curriculum. As an outcome I'd like participants to make connections to the web literacy map directly. By creating, designing and printing 8x8 pixel emoji stencils as elements for rock, paper & scissors, participants will engage with the heart of the curriculum/ read, write, participate/ through this timeless classic. e.g. Rock - build, Paper - write, Scissors - remix Pixels- the building blocks of the visual web emojis- the way we express emotions on the web Direct connection to Codemoji and #althestickerz web literacy project Printed on the Mozfest badge the pixel images will create a visual message. Also I think it would be great to print directly onto poster of the web literacy curriculum- making connections to the different components with rock paper scissors.

jvallera commented 7 years ago

I think the connection between web literacy skills and making art is important and unique here. Is it possible to add some images to examples @shillontheroad ? or a link to visuals that you are using for inspiration (like codemoji/ROCK PAPER SCISSORS OPEN WEB). People reviewing these proposals may not know what that is. Also @chadsansing your curriculum is inspiration here, so if you have any suggestions for how Mark can develop this idea please add them. Great idea!

chadsansing commented 7 years ago

@shillontheroad - let's follow up on email next week. Let me know if I can be of help!

shillontheroad commented 7 years ago

@jvallera @ArtsAward @chadsansing thanks for your support and comments. I ran a prototype of this workshop at Sheffield University as part of the MakEY project which is researching emerging literacies and the maker culture in early years. The opportunities to remix the 8x8 laser cut grid were highlighted with participants embracing the open ended print workshop. Dealing with complexity and repetition was a noted learning experience as part of the workshop. One participant returned the following day with is own versions of the 'pixel screen' cut with different, more durable materials. img_0273 img_0249 img_0244

Wow, this looks like a blast! Thanks for sharing updates.

shillontheroad commented 7 years ago

@flukeout I just read your blog post re: web literacy garden. I love the analogy of healthy garden and the common attributes required for a healthy internet. It would be great to tweak my rock paper scissors proposal to include printing with organic materials e.g. Potato prints using the 8x8 pixel grid, to grow a html tree type installation for the space. @ArtsAward

jvallera commented 7 years ago

that just made me think of this project one of our young leaders did at last years mozfest....Marina Malone made a DIY walled garden where people could add to her imaginary city of solutions for internet issues. You probably saw it, but it developed into to something very beautiful by the end of the festival.

shillontheroad commented 6 years ago

@edovio thanks for the great news. See you at the festival!

shillontheroad commented 6 years ago

@edovio I confirm that I shall be at Mozfest 2017, see you there!

edovio commented 6 years ago

Hello @shillontheroad Thanks for your confirmation! :)

edovio commented 6 years ago

Dear Facilitators, we are happy to share with you the MozFest facilitators 2017 Guide at the Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fezzIH8u0Li6pIHMNYDCuUjA_gHpB4Px9eXQo4Ol7es/edit It is also important to sign in here: https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/festival.fabriders.facilitatorcoaching2017 for the coaching session, that helps you in your facilitation role! :)

flukeout commented 6 years ago

@shillontheroad - glad you like the theme! I'll be working on some space design & visuals in the very near future and will keep you posted if you are interested (or have ideas and feedback!).

Additionally, our "Artist in Residence" is running a kind of DIY meme-lab workshop, including some DIY components. Are you interested in connecting with that artist, maybe there are ways for you to collaborate & engage with that somehow. Let me know and I'll make an invite or pass along your session details to the artist.

shillontheroad commented 6 years ago

@flukeout thanks- please keep me updated on visuals & space design- I currently working on creating options to print with organic materials. I would love to connect with our 'Artist in Residence'. It would be cool to connect our engagements is some way. Thx

flukeout commented 6 years ago

@shillontheroad - Hey are Lars and Björn attending as well, we'll need their email addresses to get them the tickets and access to your session in our Schedule App. Can you email them to @edovio - his email is edoardo.viola@mozillaitalia.org - thanks!

Also, do you have an ideal session length in mind? I'm working out a draft schedule now, would be good to know what works well.

flukeout commented 6 years ago

@shillontheroad - we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

PS: So for this session we figured we'd start it early on Saturday and then just run it for as long as you want? There will be some overlaps with other sessions in the Gallery space. Let me know if that works, or if you'd want to run twice, once each day?

shillontheroad commented 6 years ago

@flukeout - The WebLit Space looks fab- too many cool sessions. Running all day Saturday sounds perfect. I'm part of the Mozilla Club Showcase too, just trying to figure out how to be at both or how to combine. I'll discuss with @jvallera next week too. Unfortunately, due to starting a new school Lars & Björn will not be joining me this year:( they'll be there in spirit! Thanks! for all you support- the countdown begins

edovio commented 6 years ago

Hello @shillontheroad , I need to ask you to give me the Email contact of all the additional Facilitators in your Session. You can send me by Email at the address: edovio@mozillaitalia.org. Thanks you & see you at the MozFest!!!

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hey @edovio - looks like unfortunately the co-facilitators will not be able to attend.

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hey @shillontheroad - I've got some space design updates. We ordered a ton of cardboard and construction paper as well as some glueguns, etc etc and will be decorating the space with hand-made cardboard / paper craft plants. We've also got some live plants and a few pads of artificial turf.

If you've got some plans / ieas / background / experience in making paper plants / flowers please share! I'm hoping some of the facilitators will help us out early on Friday with decorations.

jvallera commented 6 years ago

This sounds great @flukeout !! @shillontheroad those stencils you made for the showcase might come in handy here too!

shillontheroad commented 6 years ago

@flukeout @jvallera cool- letting participants print pixel flowers and leaves with my stencil would be great- this will connect nicely with my surveillance camera tulips! I also was thinking of html tag leaves- printed to add to cardboard trees/ plants- we could print directly to construction paper. Also- if we had some compost bags we could invite participants to plant ideas...can't wait to get to Ravenbourne now!

shillontheroad commented 6 years ago

@edovio @flukeout any chance we could source an old school overhead projector from Ravensbourne for the mozfest weekend? I've just experimented with this at American School Milan and the visuals were super cool. Thx

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hey @shillontheroad - I'll check into it!
