[ Session Name ] Databox - Decentring Personal Data Processing [ Primary Space ] Decentralization [ Secondary Space ] Privacy and Security

[ Submitter's Name ] Andy Crabtree [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] University of Nottingham

[ Additional facilitators ] Tom Lodge,James Colley,Anthony Brown,Yousef Amar,Hamed Haddadi,John Moore

What will happen in your session?

This session will engage participants with the Databox application environment as a key means of decentring personal data processing and circumventing dystopian futures. Instead of taking data to the cloud, Databox takes computing to the data through a unique app environment enabling local, privacy-preserving data processing that puts citizens in control. The session will enable participants to get their hands on the Databox application SDK and explore for themselves how novel apps leveraging personal data sources may be developed and shared. Participants will learn how to install and configure the Databox and App SDK, build drivers to leverage personal data sources, and create privacy-preserving apps that process personal data derived from multiple sources.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The session seeks to enable Mozfest participants to get their hands on the Databox application development environment and explore for themselves a radical alternative to the current technological infrastructure that underpins dystopian visions. In doing so we hope to learn from our participants of the challenges that confront a decentred future, the potential of the Databox platform to address these, and key application areas that might motivate and drive decentralisation forwards. In addition to getting their hands on an alternative future, our participants will be encouraged to feedback their experiences, reflections and thoughts on the Databox platform and the steps we need to take to make decentralisation happen.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Access to IoT data sources will be provided to participants and requires the installation of sensors and a dedicated network, and ready access to power sources is required to run two Databoxes and peripherals to support app creation over the duration of the session.

Time needed

All weekend, as an installation, exhibit or drop-in session

Hi Andy & team,

Thanks for the proposal. It's very interesting. I was curious about the following questions:
