What will happen in your session?

The Data Detox Bar is your one-stop shop for online privacy. Come visit the skilled baristas who are handing out Data Detox Kits, an 8 day programme to rid yourself of all the poisonous data clogging your digital ecosystem.

We've previously held Data Detox Bars at the pop-up shop "The Glass Room: Looking into your online life" in New York, USA and at Welcome Refugee Days at Kista Library, Stockholm, Sweden. We found it was a useful way to communicate the basics of online privacy to a general public with little or no experience in the topic. In the session we will highlight the role libraries and community centres can play in digital literacy outreach projects.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal is to 1) raise awareness of digital privacy and the data flows of our everyday life, 2) present a simple tool on how to minimise the flow of your personal data to other people and services, and 3) to showcase how digital activists of all kinds - be it librarians, teachers... etc. - can reach out and get through to average users by hosting a simple set-up event with a minimum of resources and previous skills (this is based on the fact that not all people are data experts, but many people still care about the lack of online privacy).

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

A bar (similar to the apple genius bars), i.e. a couple of tables, preferably in standing height It would be great to have power strips so that the bar can be used as a "charging station" for devices (a multi-functional bar would be great for the visitor numbers :)

@auremoser do you know if folks from TTC are planning to attend this?

There are many proposals in the P&S space that propose check-ups/digital hygiene. Wondering if the data detox bar could be the place to host these, and that it would be suitable for multiple approaches? ie if there are other facilitators who have specific approaches, they could hold an "office hour" for those?

@brettgaylor I do think that some folks from TTC will attend, there's the full DDB event during the pre-week that @Saallen and some MoCo folks are coordinating, but this would be a more persistent install at Mozfest, and we were thinking it might be cool to keep it open as a gallery/consulting exhibit with a charging station for phones and machines. It might be best on the Privacy/Security floor, or on Open Innovation. I'm also open to suggestions!
