What will happen in your session?
We will introduce DATA4CHANGE through a mini version of one of our data visualisation workshops. We will bring datasets from our D4C alumni (eg. sexual harassment in Egypt, corruption in Lebanon, LGBT rights in Uganda), which are published on our GitHub profile, and visualise them, telling a story using RAW (open source). First, participants will form teams, ensuring a balance and range of skills and backgrounds through a brief (and fun) participatory activity. Then, we’ll give teams briefing documents for a dataset and project, and our moderators will move around the teams to provide support and guidance. We’ll give training on visualisation tools, and create final products that can be shared with the HROs that provided the initial data.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
To work with data collected by human rights organisations to create advocacy and campaigning materials that they can use in their work. To introduce participants to the DATA4CHANGE alumni network, and encourage active participation beyond MozFest. To talk about the challenges in working with human rights data (ethics, privacy, risk involved) and to showcase the amazing work of our D4C alumni network, many of whom are working in incredibly risky environments, and in most cases not able to access ‘free and open’ internet. Our goal is to understand how we can encourage people to support HROs across the world with their skills and time to achieve core advocacy goals.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
We will only need a projector, and will bring all other equipment ourselves.
