[ Submitter's Name ] Sarah Morris [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Nucleus Learning Network [ Submitter's Github ] @secmorris

What will happen in your session?

In 2017 MisInfoCon brought together a diverse group, including technologists, educators, and journalists, to hack solutions to the current fake news epidemic. This proposed session hopes to bring the collaborative spirit of MisInfoCon to MozFest through a session where participants will hack a news and web literacy curriculum called Mission:Information. This curriculum seeks to empower youth to become strong consumers, producers, and distributors of media online.

After engaging in a kinesthetic warm-up activity, participants will explore and brainstorm ways to further develop the curriculum. Participants will break into groups and use tools like Thimble to work on ideas that resonate with them, whether it is adapting the curriculum for younger learners or developing associated computer science lessons.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

This proposed session aims to be highly collaborative, participatory, hands-on, and audience-driven. The main goals are, first, to introduce participants to issues and concerns related to fake news and misinformation. The second goal is to discover how Mozilla’s web literacy outcomes can support and enhance news literacy education. The third goal is to give participants an opportunity to explore, and consider ways to use, an open-source news and web literacy curriculum called Mission:Information. Finally, the last goal is to engage participants in a hacking session where they can contribute their ideas and skills and work on expanding and remixing the current curriculum. Participants will guide the direction of the session and determine the focus of their breakout working groups.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a personal device to this proposed session. I would need a projector and basic office supplies such as post-it notes and pens.

Time needed

Hello @secmorris!

Thank you for your proposal! I wanted to add myself to this issue and introduce myself.

@EPIKhub Thank you! And I'd be very happy to explore scope for a second session in the youth zone. The Social Action youth track sounds right up my alley!

@EPIKhub Any sense if you'll be taking this session into your space?

EPIKhub commented 7 years ago

@phillipadsmith not sure yet if we will do 2 sessions. I'll look at the schedule in the next 2 weeks to see where we are at with space

phillipadsmith commented 7 years ago

@EPIKhub Thank you for the update. Just to confirm: You've accepted the other session?

Hello @secmorris! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to the issue with an outline of the topics or activities for your session. You don’t need to send your slidedeck to us, but if you could please reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and time estimates for your session that would be great.

I wanted to also check in about your proposed session length. Is there any way that you could trim down to 60 minutes? We have limited slots for 90 minutes and we want to see if this is a possibility. Please consider this as you send us your session outline. Thanks!

secmorris commented 6 years ago

@jonathanprozzi Hello! I'd be happy to trim things down to 60 minutes.

Here's an outline with time estimates. Let me know if you need any additional info!

Intros and Opening Discussion - 10 minutes will vary this accordingly based on attendee numbers Get attendees in small groups to discuss the following:

Mission:Information Project Intro - 5-10 minutes

Working Group Formation and Brainstorm - 5-10 minutes

Group Work - 25-30 minutes

Wrap up - 5 minutes

Thanks very much for the detailed outline @secmorris!

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Updated the session time from 90min to 60min.

flukeout commented 6 years ago

@secmorris - we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

@secmorris - I shot you an email about possibly switching your session to the same time on Sunday instead of Saturday at 12:45, when it's currently scheduled for. Let me know if that would work, we're trying to accommodate another session that can only get some youth helpers in on the Saturday. Cheers!
