[ Session Name ] Logging into Life: Working with Older Adults in Digital Literacy Education [ Primary Space ] Digital Inclusion [ Secondary Space ] Web Literacy

[ Submitter's Name ] Meggie Lasher [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Horry Georgetown Technical College, Conway, SC, USA

What will happen in your session?

Participants in this session will learn the basics of working with older adults in digital literacy education settings. Information society is now deeply embedded in digital life. For many older adults, they are often separated from this sphere of society based on a lack of skills using technology- in some ways, this is digital illiteracy. This session will help participants understand ways to facilitate learning, use approachable language, and employ practical examples to help those isolated from information society participate. There will be opportunities for small group work, sharing ideas and solutions, as well as real world examples.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal of this session is to introduce participants to the lived experiences of those living in the digital divide. More often than not, individuals who are isolated from technology and information society are older, people of color, and/or speak a non-dominant language where they reside. Since technology is part of daily life, this exclusion prevents these individuals from having access to social, government, and educational services. Understanding how to offer the opportunity to learn about using technology gives this population the access and skills necessary to participate in the modern world.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

I will need a projector, pens, and notepads.

Time needed

less than 60 mins

@flukeout this could work well in Web Literacy!

flukeout commented 7 years ago

It sure does @sedgwickkm - paging @Kenyatta1. Let me know how this fits into your space, and if it's not ideal we would love to consider it as well. Cheers.

Hello! Here's the link to the weebly site created for my independent research for my masters degree. http://diglithandbook.weebly.com/ A full handbook for developing a similar program is hosted there as well.

A few more resources: Program Basics Presentation (originally presented at a faculty meeting at UNC CH School of Information and Library Science) Program website (it's quite sluggish for some reason...?)

hannahkane commented 7 years ago

hey @flukeout - I'm removing this from the Digital Inclusion milestone. We hope you'll consider it for Web Lit!

flukeout commented 7 years ago

We'll definitely consider it @hannahkane - thank you!

Hello @meggieann - We are very happy to announce you that we have decided to accept your session at the festival this year! Congratulations! 🎉

meggieann commented 7 years ago

@edovio I am very excited! Thank you so much! I can also shift content for a broader reach. Digital illiteracy can affect anyone in all sorts of contexts. What are my next steps?

meggieann commented 6 years ago

Hello! I am confirming Edoardo Viola's request via email. I will be at MozFest 2017! @edovio

edovio commented 6 years ago

Hello @meggieann, Thanks for your confirmation! :)

Hello @meggieann! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and activities for your session. A rough, bullet-point outline with time estimates would be ideal. Thank you and let us know if you have any questions.

Hello @meggieann, we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

Also, thank you for the detailed outline!
