[ Session Name ] Mozilla - A role model for modern diplomacy [ Primary Space ] Decentralization [ Secondary Space ] Digital Inclusion

[ Submitter's Name ] Kristi Progri [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Open Labs Hackerspace, Mozilla Tech Speaker [ Submitter's Github ] @kristiprogri

What will happen in your session?

How does technology affect nowaday's diplomacy and policymaking? Latter has been distancing itself more and more from the traditional communication model, switching over to a much more decentralized model. We will look into what implications this shift has had for foreign politics and policymaking with other countries. How do we perceive negotiations in this time and age and how does Free Software helps us Security and Privacy -wise in these aspects? Taking lessons from Mozilla and how its strategy aims to disrupt the way we use the internet so anyone can have equal open access. Why Mozilla can be a great role model for modern diplomacy, taking some lessons from Mozilla Advocacy and the Mozilla Manifesto.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal of my talk is to show the audience that technology and FLOSS projects are effecting the international area and it's the right time to redefine the concept of the new diplomacy. The old-skool times where people could only imagine diplomacy as a high level gathering in a fancy office is now outdated. Say hello to online diplomacy and doing the same job online with a similar, if not more productive outcome traditional diplomacy has had.. Last but not least we will have a look at how the usage of a language can be a big powerplay in the diplomatic relationships of one country.

Time needed

less than 60 mins

Hey Kristi,

This sounds like a great talk to help contextualise some of the other, very tech-specific talks that've been proposed. It'd be great to hear @cubicgarden and @dvigneshwer's thoughts - I'd be keen to feature a discussion around this topic too.

Hi @kristiprogri ,

Thanks for the proposal. I really like the talk domain and super curious about your content.

Yes, I agree with you that technology has been a game changer for traditional governance and there's a lot we can learn from Mozilla's work in this domain.

I had a couple questions for you:

kristiprogri commented 7 years ago

Hello Vigneshwer,

Thanks a lot for reaching out. Actually, that was the idea of my talk and since I saw that there will be a special area only for decetralization communication, I wanted to give a bigger picture of where all the technology developments have been going and how it will shape the diplomacy and international affairs. In my diploma I have mention case studies where it has been successful and quiet effective, so that would definitely be part of my presentation and at the same time those stories are the real argument why all this can lead to a successful diplomacy. One of the best examples has to do with countries which have economical issues. Albania has a limited budget to maintain embassies around the world and to our standards living in Nordic countries is very expensive so government had to close them. In this case keeping the relations online would be a great solutions so countries would still continue collaborating with each other.

Let me know if there is something else you would like to know,

Best regards, Kristi

I had a couple questions for you:

  • Can you elaborate a little more on the decentralized communication model mentioned in the proposal?
  • Do you plan to discuss in detail about any case study or success stories of online diplomacy?

Thanks for the explainer @kristiprogri will get back to you soon

@kristiprogri thanks for your patience and for submitting this proposal - we very much like the idea of it! I know you mentioned that a travel stipend would make a lot of difference but we have a limited number of travel and accommodation stipends to go around and these are now pretty much all assigned. Do you think you be able to come and run this session without the aid of a stipend?

kristiprogri commented 7 years ago

@maboa thanks for making the time to see my application. Unfortunately I won't be able to attend without the aid

kristiprogri commented 7 years ago

Hello Vigneshwer Please find below the outline, the estimated time will be 30 min (Q&A included)

Mozilla is so much more than a browser vendor. Let's have a look at how Mozilla handles advocacy and policymaking in various countries, especially Europe, to keep the web open and free.

How did technology affect nowaday's diplomacy and policymaking? While distancing itself more and more from the traditional communication model, switching over to a much more decentralized model and the impact this shift has had for foreign politics and policymaking with other countries. How do we precept negotiations in this time and age and how does Free Software helps us Security and Privacy -wise in these aspects? Taking lessons from Mozilla and how its strategy aims to disrupt the way we use the internet so anyone can have equal open access. Why Mozilla can be a great role model for modern diplomacy, taking some lessons from Mozilla Advocacy and the Mozilla Manifesto.

Does your session require any additional materials or electronic equipment other than a projector and general office stationery? No, projector and general office stationery will be enough.

Thank you, See you soon

Kristi
