[ Session Name ] Digital Creativity in Primary Schools [ Primary Space ] Youth Zone [ Secondary Space ] Web Literacy

[ Submitter's Name ] Sarah Longfield [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] See Think Make

[ Additional facilitators ] Kim Stuyck,Fraser Morrison

What will happen in your session?

We will talk about how we increased the digital creativity in Kaimhill School, Aberdeen in October 2016, through our Arts Award Takeover Week. We will then run a hands on workshop demonstrating some of the apps and techniques used in the project, highlighting how these fit in both delivering Arts Award and the school curriculum. Apps include DoInk, iMovie and Tellagami. More info on our Takeover can be found at www.seethinkmake.co.uk/takeover.html

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

To provide inspiration and a range of ideas for teachers, youth workers and other youth professionals to use in boosting people's digital creativity.

To increase the access for school children to the IT equipment available in schools: Several of the teachers in our Takeover school had never accessed the school's iPads and Chrome books until we ran our project, but now are using them regularly.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Whilst we'll strive to provide android alternatives, the main apps we would be using are apple only (e.g. Tellagami and DoInk.) so we would need iPads available - a minimum of 5 where a group could share if there's large numbers. We can bring all other materials and will also bring our own iPad.

If this isn't available please let us know and we could see if we could borrow some iPads up here to bring or could adapt the session to include a demonstration and then ideas generation exercises on paper/through conversation.

Time needed

less than 60 mins

@emrysgreen Sarah at See Think Make was one of our Fringe activity providers in 2016. I'm going to email her (no github name) to ask if she would consider a youth led element to this session so that you can look at curating into the YL pathway offering the Arts Award bursary, either that or it's still a good fit for Web Lit

Costs given - Shelby is up for it, so it looks like we can make it work. Just looking at train/flight the cheapest would be trains which currently could get for £180 for the two of us, plus accommodation, food and travel in London it will be looking like about £425 for full costs.

ArtsAward commented 7 years ago

Have included in the Arts Award bursary budget @emrysgreen and removed stipend label here. When we curate the other young leader offers from AA centres we can work out the total spend.

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

Ok thanks @ArtsAward

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

Hiya @flukeout - we'd like to propose this session for Web Lit under the youth led track.

flukeout commented 7 years ago

Perfect, thank you @emrysgreen - will include in our deliberations, looks very interesting.

edovio commented 7 years ago

Hello Sarah - We are very happy to announce you that we have decided to accept your session at the festival this year! Congratulations! 🎉

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

Wonderful. Thanks @edovio

emrysgreen commented 7 years ago

Hiya @edovio & @flukeout - please could we request that the session is scheduled somewhere between 2pm Saturday & 2pm Sunday as they will likely need to travel down from Scotland and back again. Is that OK to consider in your scheduling please?

sarahlongfield commented 7 years ago

edovio commented 7 years ago

Great! Thanks for your quickly reply!!! :)

Hello @sarahlongfield! As MozFest is approaching we’re asking that you reply to this issue with an outline of the topics and activities for your session. A rough, bullet-point outline with time estimates would be ideal. Thank you and let us know if you have any questions.

sarahlongfield commented 7 years ago

Hi @jonathanprozzi sorry for the delay in responding. We are currently planning the workshop so will send you details soon. In terms of time, we can plan to suit your timeslots, but something around an hour would be ideal.

sarahlongfield commented 7 years ago

Our workshop will involve:

Introduction to our Arts Award Takeover project in Kaimhill Primary. We'll show examples of how the learners used digital technology to make art and how to evidence their work in the project in a creative way.
[ideally there would be a projector or screen in the space, but we can bring a picopix projector.]

Then it's about applying the themes of youth led digital creativity by involving attendees in playing themselves. We will run exercises using apps we used on the project including quick green screen tasks and camjam/mad pad to make music. These exercises will be short and snappy so we can include new participants or people can move on without disrupting the flow.

[ideally participants would download the app and use their smartphone/tablet, but we can also quickly adapt if wifi or tech wasn't available - we're drama facilitators so well versed in changing things to suit the group and the location]

Dear Facilitators, we are happy to share with you the MozFest facilitators 2017 Guide at the Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fezzIH8u0Li6pIHMNYDCuUjA_gHpB4Px9eXQo4Ol7es/edit It is also important to sign in here: https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/festival.fabriders.facilitatorcoaching2017 for the coaching session, that helps you in your facilitation role! :)

flukeout commented 7 years ago

Thanks for the outline @sarahlongfield - we'll check in about the availability of iPads at the venue and get back to you as soon as I know. The projector shouldn't be a problem!

Are you able to provide or list out the apps that the participants might be using? We could include that information in the session description in the schedule app. Might be nice if people come with them pre-installed. I think connecting to the internet during Mozfest can be tricky at times.

flukeout commented 7 years ago

@sarahlongfield - we've created the first version of the Web Literacy Space schedule for the weekend and wanted you to have a look...

Please take a few minutes to locate your session (I've had to abbreviate the session names) and let us know if you have any questions or if there are any reasons that you cannot host your session during the chosen time (like a travel conflict or another session you are hosting at the same time). Please comment in this issue and and include @flukeout to get my attention.

We'll be finalizing the schedule next week and updating the Guidebook app that attendees will use during the festival.

Thanks!

flukeout commented 7 years ago

Oh, cool article @emrysgreen - thanks for posting!

flukeout commented 7 years ago

@sarahlongfield @emrysgreen - oops, I just re-read the issue and noticed the scheduling request! Will update our schedule accordingly.

sarahlongfield commented 6 years ago

Shelby has now added a bit to the article with her perspective. Sorry about our limited timings. Let me know when you've updated the schedule. thanks!

mwakaswanga commented 6 years ago

@sarahlongfield @emrysgreen unfortunately there wont be any iPads, but Nexus can be provided instead, hope they can serve the purpose.

sarahlongfield commented 6 years ago

Yes that's grand. Will use android based apps, or if people attend with their own iPads, we could do a mix of apple and android. Thanks for checking.

sarahlongfield commented 6 years ago

Hi. Any news on when our session will now be? Thanks

sarahlongfield commented 6 years ago

Sorry should have tagged @flukeout there

flukeout commented 6 years ago

Hi @sarahlongfield - I switched your session to be at 15:15 on Saturday instead! Thanks for the heads up. You should also be able to find your session in Guidebook the official scheduling app for the festival. Did you receive an invite to Guidebook?

sarahlongfield commented 6 years ago

Thanks @flukeout. Yes I did get an invite... got lost in the to do list. Will add stuff there tomorrow. 3.15 on the Sat is perfect.
